I think if it’s a social event like some of the attempts I’ve read about, it’s just as much about the spectacle as it is about the ride…that’d be my main motivation to try (and almost certainly fail).

I love hills, but honestly this just sounds boring (and, yes, very difficult). If I was gonna take the day off of work to do an all-day ride, I’d definitely rather ride roads that I’d never ridden before — and not the same ones on repeat :) A 30k day sounds really hard, but on the edge of doable. DD (~16k) was a tough ride, but luckily I didn’t suffer any of that discomfort that Tim described (!!). I struggle to imagine doing it twice, but with the right (much slower) pace, perhaps. But finding 30k in elevation that would be enjoyable / not-overly-repetitive and <200 miles doesn't sound likely around here.

(I think that’s a long way of saying, “y’all have fun!” I look forward to seeing these hit the Facebook/Strava.)

As for boring, I couldn’t agree more. That’s why I’m inviting you all along for the um Fun. With a large enough group it would be more funnier than anything. watching and riding up and down the same hill for 20 hours, Hilarious!

Yeah, that’s fair. With a large enough group this could definitely be a fun day on the bike. Well, “fun” :)

I think if I’m honest, I just wish I was saturated enough with regular riding (i.e. had enough time for regular rides) that something like this sounded like a perfectly good/novel/fun challenge & way to spend the day on the bike. As it is, I just find scraps of time to ride. Of course, I say “wish” loosely, since I wouldn’t *actually* rather be doing this than riding around the block with my kids. :-)

??????????? I’m picturing a bunch of cyclists laughing uncontrollably while they pedal up and down a very large hill having the best of times. That would be awesome, but somehow I don’t see that happening. Haha.

I’d be up for Mount Mitchelling (6,684 ft), maybe even Haleakalāing (10,023 ft). But otherwise a) I know I can’t climb 29,000 ft in a day, and b) watching other people do it would indeed get a bit tiring.

Respect that. Don’t worry, my daughter will be thee re-filling water bottles and putting smiles on faces that desperately need smiles

The rwgps data doesn’t really make the climb look hard so, https://www.strava.com/activities/311898126/segments/7358344785 from when I road it. I promise this climb is a lot steeper than it looks. I also did this climb with about 40+lbs of bike and gear. So I think i could easily shave a few minutes off.

I put this at 14 climbs. Kinda longer than I would like, at 229 miles ?|?|? but there’s a subway right at the bottom of the hill, If you average 11mph counting stops it’s ONLY a 21 hour bike ride :) ahaha… probably a sweet spot you could hit. Dont go all the way up, I peg the first 1000′ at 3.5 miles making it closer to 203 miles.

Nah–Westernport Wall is too steep. You want a nice easy consistent grade where you don’t have to get out of the saddle just to get up it.

I knew that, almost maid me puke!

This probably would put us somewhere around 300 miles and just won’t cut it http://ridewithgps.com/routes/9516768

Too Many Miles As Well http://ridewithgps.com/routes/9516867

perfect climb and services right at the bottom. I think the services would be the big challenge. I can think of bigger climbs that would probably work out but they are in the middle of NOTHING. Could always bring a shovel!

This could actually work. The actual climb would put it at 175 miles. A 8 mile detour for services. Assuming there’s support with food and water. maybe make the detour once or twice rounding out at 200 miles for the day.

I think the fact that this whole thing was started by a bunch of Australians confirms that they’re all slightly crazy, at best.

I think max grade needs to be less than 8-10%, otherwise, it’s just too steep for that type of ride. 5-8% I can do all day (or at least I have for 5-6 hours) without burning matches, but even short stretches of 10-12% eat up the reserves really quickly, and kill your average speed.
