I did Niagara Falls to Albany on the canal and Bike Route 5. It’s incredibly flat but for a couple of hills in the Little Falls area. The canal is lots of fun with free camping and nearby services. Highly recommended. http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?o=1&doc_id=654&v=11

Yep, the amount of camping was amazing and a huge change from DC. We stayed in two paid campground (one private and one a state park), at two locks, behind a fire station and at a small town visitor center. On our last evening we ran into a canal system exec who basically said you could camp anywhere you like along canal property. He recommended staying at the locks though as most of the lockmasters will give you access to their showers, bathrooms and power outlets.
Excellent trip made even better by unbelievably beautiful weather. We had two hours of rain in 8 days and those two hours happened to come on the one and only day we opted for a B&B. It doesn’t get better than that.
