Eddie Van Halen spoke last week at the Smithsonian American History Museum as part of a series on “What It Means to Be American.” Eddie Van Halen is of Dutch and Indonesian heritage. His family left the Netherlands when he was still young and immigrated to the U.S., ending up in Pasadena, Calif. He spoke a bit about his immigrant background but he spent most of his time talking about music and tinkering around with guitars and amps.
When asked if there was any advice that his father gave him that he wants to pass onto his own son (Wolfgang or Wolfie), he said you can learn from everybody, what to do and what not to do. If you make a mistake, do it twice and smile. That way people will think you meant it. He mentions a Dutch phrase (which I couldn’t quite make out). He says it means, “Just keep pedaling” in Dutch. At the 39:30 mark, to about 40:05.

I know there a couple Dutch speakers here. Anyone know this phrase?
It sounded like he said “gewoon doorfietsen” which basically means, “just cycle on through” or something like that. Perhaps a predecessor of “keep calm and cycle on?”

It should have “5150” printed on it somewhere to be really accurate.

ParticipantWell, you can’t see the front of the head tube from this angle. It could be there.
The color scheme matches the “Diver Down” cover better though.
I’m reading some of the old quotes from the band when they recorded “Diver Down.” Eddie talks about reading sheet music for “Big Bad Bill.” Maybe it was just a chord chart. He said that he doesn’t read music, but he might understand chord charts.
I found this too

Regardless of album covers, the guitar said 5150 on it at times.

In the Smithsonian video, you can see that the head on the amp says 5150. It’s a bit of a thing with him.

ParticipantI always associated it with the “5150” album. I stopped listening to them shortly after that time. Maybe he started using 5150 more generally after that point, or it’s something that I never noticed, or forgot. I only remembered that they got the number from the California code section that authorizes involuntary confinement for a person suspected of having a mental disorder that makes one a danger to oneself or to others. In the popular press, it was described as the code for the “criminally insane,” which isn’t quite accurate.

Yeah, “5150” was a decent album, but definitely a bit of a departure. They lost me after that. “1984” was definitely the apex.

ParticipantI see from the magic of Wikipedia that they had the following albums after 5150 (released in 1986):
OU812 (1988) – with Sammy Hagar
For Unlawful… (uh, people can look up the title if they’re curious) (1991) – Sammy Hagar
Balance (1995) – Sammy Hagar
Van Halen III (1998) – Gary Cherone
A Different Kind of Truth (2012) – with Wolfgang Van Halen (Eddie’s son) on bass guitar, and David Lee Roth back as the singer! The opening act for the start of their 2012 tour was… Kool & The Gang. David Lee Roth playing with three Van Halens, with Kool & The Gang as the opening act. I doubt anyone ever predicted all that. The tour was a critical and financial success.http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/jun/14/van-halenkool-gang-unlikely-pairing/
I heard a few of the big singles from the Hagar albums on TV over the years, but never the entire albums. I didn’t even realize that DLR was back with the band. I knew he had recorded a couple songs for a greatest hits album but then he was out again. Maybe all of them have finally mellowed out, thus the reunion and absence of another breakup. I’ll have to check out clips from these albums on Amazon and YouTube. I probably won’t buy them, but it’s always interesting to hear what happened to bands that I stopped listening to a long time ago.
