The County will study traffic patterns over the next months, to determine if the cycletracks and new lane configuration help or worsen multimodal traffic flow and safety.

I can say that it is much less intimidating to walk across Eads now, with two fewer car lanes to cross. I’ve never seen too much traffic on that part of Eads, so I think that one car lane in each direction (plus the two-way center turn lane) should prove to be adequate for car traffic volume. It’s certainly an improvement for pedestrians and cyclists. With hotels and the Metro station nearby, there are a lot of pedestrians along that part of Eads St.

I rode down S Eads from the sewage plant to 18th street where I hooked a left on to the S Hayes cycletrack. The bike lanes on S Eads are a big improvement for cyclists IMHO; traffic was light when I was going through so didn’t notice any negative impact on traffic but then again, that wasn’t really my concern at the time. I hope the new bike lanes heading north prevent the buses from parking on the street in front of the Holiday Inn.

If the County finds that there are no negative impacts on traffic and congestion, then they may proceed to the next stage, which would be more substantial barriers between the cycletracks and the car lanes. I don’t know when this would happen (2015? 2016? Later?) or what form those barriers will take. Maybe they will add low concrete strips in between the flex posts? New curbs along the cycletrack, on the side facing the car lanes? Repaving the cycletracks to smooth out the rough surfaces along the existing curbs? Something else?
