There is no leadership to this contest, so whoever is in charge of a function has discretion regarding how that function is run. That would include decisions on whether to have local teams. @chuxtr 182960 wrote:

Also cross-posting to the volunteers thread.

If I’m going to be on my own if I decide to take over, does that mean I’m free to come up with a “system” for team assignments that may or may not closely resemble the existing system? And do we absolutely have to have local teams? Since it would be my first time doing it, I’d rather make it as “simple” as possible.

I assign everyone a value based upon the information that I can gather about their riding styles. Some of this information is based upon what they put on the registration form, some of it is based upon previous years, and other is gathered through ride tracking data (Strava, Garmin Connect, Wahooligans, etc.).

I know I’m going to regret this, but … :)

Assuming I have (or have access to) the kind of data Casey cited, I’m willing to give her a break and do team assignments this year. Essentially, I’ll do my best to “balance” teams based on available mileage data (knowing, like the stock market, that past performance is not necessarily a predictor of the future results).

    NO LOCAL TEAMS!

Also, since I’ll be doing this “by hand,” I won’t be able to accommodate any special requests (and yes, Casey knows I was one of those people who asked … politely :) … last year). It would be good if the registration form is VERY EXPLICIT that team assignments are what they are and that special requests can’t be accommodated.

I have deleted the question about local teams, and added a statement about no special requests, to the registration form. Can you please check it out, and let me know if it works for you.

Also, Henry is putting together the “sticky” for this year. Last year’s sticky can be found at this link. If you have changes you want made to reflect whatever you are doing, please let Henry know directly.

I’ve sent the whole leadership an e-mail with other basic information. If you don’t get it, please let me know.

Form looks good to me, but then all Ima do is register and ride my bike so I’d accept whatever. Thank you to all those doing the work.

We’re going to kick you out of the forum if you don’t join in the complaining and arguing

The form is now final, unless someone screams really quickly. I will add the submit button to allow people to register, and post a notice on this forum, as soon as obscurerichard clears out the data from last year.

Yes, I realize that this violates all forum traditions of having at least 20 pages of argument before anything becomes final.

Sorry for the late thought. It’s not a big deal, obviously, but – rather than have the text box for the “More details on what you are volunteering to do” that seems like a headache for you per your earlier post, would you want to instead just direct people to that thread on the message board? (http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?13903-2019-Freezing-Saddles-Volunteers)

This has not been a big deal in past years (in which that question has been included). And it gives the leadership (who get access to the submissions) more idea of which potential volunteers they might want to call on. For example, someone might say that they are willing to help with happy hours, but then specify under the more details question that they are volunteering to bring paper plates. That might not be the right person to call on for scouting out potential new locations for the happy hours.

I’ve tried to avoid truly open-ended questions (e.g., “Do you have any other comments?”). But to the extent this question is targeted to get only information we can actually use, I think it’s worthwhile.

Good to know it hasn’t been an issue in the past. Never mind, then :)

One correction. Delete what’s in red in paragraph below:

Freezing Saddles is a game organized by friends in the Washington Area Bike Forum. It is a hat tournament style competition where participants are randomly assigned to teams based on some weird system the Washington Area Bike Forum has come up with over the years. Communications and organization will be through the Washington Area Bike Forum.

Question: 250 registrations = how many teams? I can’t remember how many people per team (you would think I should know since I was a team captain last year). But 250 is only “easily” divisible by 10, so that would mean 25 teams. Is that what we’re aiming for?

Why not 10 teams of 25 riders?

Last year, I was asked not to register the Slackers. The thought was that they could just sign up for the relevant Strava club after registration was complete, as they don’t get assigned to teams or compete.

Of course, this meant we weren’t checking for the requirement that they have previously competed. So I asked early on whether I should register them this year. Having received no request to do so, I have not changed the form. @accordioneur 183025 wrote:
