A few of you know me, most do not…so this is going to be interesting, fun, and weird…that’s not the dirty part. The dirty part is the grime and mud that some of us willingly ride our bikes through because pavement is fun, but boring (and dangerous) in the winter time.

That hashtag in the thread title should be used to denote rides that qualify as not on pavement, it’s an honor system.

    1) To qualify a ride must be more than 5km (3.1 miles) in length, sleaze rides won’t get it done.
    2) Any ride type counts, commute, social, errands…the key is using a path or trail that is not paved (sorry, the MVT despite its horrific and ever worsening condition is still paved).

The goal here is to recognize those riders (like me) who split their time on pavement and gravel/dirt. I believe in the years past the scoring of the rides using the FS database was binary, a tagged ride counted as 1, and the rider with the most tagged rides was the winner.

That’s awesome, but, let’s make it better. If you want to participate, make a post in this thread after your first #DirtyBikerFS20 qualifying ride, so tagged in the title on Strava. In the post, list the date and the estimated distance off pavement. For each successive ride that meets the criteria, tag your rides appropriately in Strava, then edit your post here to keep a running log of your “dirty” rides and total distance, the idea being that the most miles off the paved surfaces earns a “dirty” award to be given at the closing happy hour. To keep things fair (because it is simply too easy to go ride gravel here in Stuttgart), I will recuse myself from competition, though I will most certainly tag rides and keep a running record of my mileage on dirt as well for motivation.

Helpful would be a photo attached to each ride in Strava proving it…remember, if it isn’t in Strava, it didn’t happen.

Remember, wash your bikes…dirt and mud really wreak havoc on your drivetrains.

My first #DirtyBikerFS20 ride. A short, half in the dark, single speed ride in Pocahontas State Park. https://www.strava.com/activities/2999748666

Ok, I got dirty, but it was on the wet Central Park tarmac so it doesn’t count here. :(

I think that anyone who rode around here today will qualify for the dirty biker award. It was a total slopfest. I think the roads were worse than the trails.

Maybe we could have a “road” dirty biker award for the person who takes the most time to clean the bike after a ride.

My first #DirtyBiker ride through the dirt roads of the Achimota Forest Reserve in the capital city of Accra, Ghana, on a skinny tire rental that kept spinning out in the dusty sand traps!

Here’s what DirtyBiking on the Bridle Path would look like if it was allowed in Central Park.

Well, here we are…and I am sorry for a late notification of the win. First off, my plan to drop off the prize for distribution at the HH was thwarted by a hastily emplaced Presidential travel ban that caused me to cut a work trip short with about 3 hours notice so I could get home before being stuck in the US away from my family. Second, as I scanned the thread here, I struggled to really determine who the winner was, since mileage is the key component…for instance, tagging a ride that has a 1/4 mile (400m) of gravel that is 50 miles (~80km) in length defeats the spirit, since the idea is go ride dirty surfaces on purpose!

That all said, Mike T had 21 days on qualifying surfaces, with consularrider at 19 days…giving the benefit of the doubt, based on how the system calculates, I have to give the win to Mike T, but consualrrider gets an honorable mention for clearly going out of the way to find gravel as well. I tries to watch as many of the rest of you as I could see (due to privacy settings, some rides are not visible to me), and it warms my heart to see people leaving the pavement for the kinds of riding I have come to love. Mike T, please send me a PM, and I will try to arrange mailing you the prize since I don’t expect to be in the US anytime soon…both due to current DOD travel restrictions and my upcoming move to Brussels this summer.

Hi everyone. I’m a gravel grinder and I’ve started tagging my rides with #dirtybiker – man is this dirty work so far this year! Have fun out there. Try to rinse your bike off when you can!
