Directions from National Mall to MVT

I’ve done my riding exclusively in DC, and it’s time to branch out. I’d like to ride to Theodore Roosevelt Island this weekend, but I am nervous about finding the access points to cross the river. Could somebody post detailed instructions from the National Mall to cross the river and access the MVT going westbound? And the reverse, if the access points are different?

And, for bonus points: what’s the bike parking situation at Teddy Roosevelt Island?

Near the Jefferson Memorial you will find the access point to the bike/pedestrian path on the 14th St. Bridge. This leads directly to the MVT.

Bike parking won’t be a problem; there are racks at the entrance. Bring a lock.

The most direct route is crossing the Roosevelt Bridge. The path is narrow, but it doesn’t get a lot of traffic. The entrance to the path is right in front of the Kennedy Center:

The path that will take you across the river is here

The more roundabout route is to go past the Jefferson, across the 14th St. Bridge path, then north on the MVT to Roosevelt Island. Reverse the route and you’re right back in DC.

Thanks everyone! I feel more confident about finding the path now. I think I will probably go the more roundabout way since my dad is in town, and that seems more scenic.

Actually, the TR Bridge is more scenic. But it’s also a lot more narrow, with a little barrier that everyone hates. Many find that enough reason to choose the 14th Street Bridge.

You could do a loop by riding over one bridge and then back over another.
