New search implemented! Take a look and let us know if it’s any better…

Interesting. I think it’s the best solution, short of re-engineering the entire site and search function (which might take decades and millions of man hours!).

Nothing against this site, but I really hate forum software. The backends are either all the same or clones of each other and IMO they’re all horrible, horrible software. Threads that go on for thousands of posts are completely useless. Search is worthless (but much better now that it’s using Google; thanks, Tim!). Obviously my feelings run deep. :) It’s too bad, because this one, anyway, is a great community resource! And there’s little excuse for these tools being so remedial. Forum software looks just like it did 15 years ago.

(I typically just use Tapatalk, which provides a simpler — but I would suggest more pleasant — interface. Or just the activity stream. IMO there isn’t enough forum activity to get that worked up about dividing things into different discussion boards.)

I did a bit of Googling to see what innovation might be out there for how to organize community forums. I found an interesting survey: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/internet-forums-reimagined-future-of-online-discussions/ . In particular something like Discource (http://www.discourse.org/) would probably be an easy fit, since it’s open-source (hence, free, as in beer and speech). Their online demo/sandbox was a little hard to make sense of since people are just trying all sorts of random stuff. The tagging is cool. I dunno, food for thought, anyway.

FYI–I think the tapatalk “like” function should be working now. Let us know if it isn’t.

Exciting! I’ll have to check. Not having “like” was one of the biggest things keeping me from using Tapatalk more often.

The other is getting practically no cell mobile service at my office (4 ft thick stone walls don’t play nice with cell signals on an already inferior network, go figure), but I can’t blame the forum for that. ;)

Can we have a sub-forum where whining is strictly forbidden?

    I hate that idea.
