Did anyone who biked this last year see how bad parking was at Gravely Point?
This will be my husband’s first bike ride in about 2 years, and he’s made it clear he can’t handle the full ride from S. Alexandria to DC, 20 mile DC Bike Ride, and then back home, so I’m trying to find a closer place to park and then ride into the city. Gravely Point seems the obvious choice, but I’m worried it might be a nuthouse. Does anyone remember it being crazy last year?
My other option is parking at the shopping center at the Rt 1 and 4 MRT intersection or in Del Ray, but that’s a few extra miles out. My husband chickens out on these things all the time at the last minute, so I’m really hoping to find something close enough to get him back on his bike so he can remember how awesome it is and begin riding to work again soon.
Long Bridge Park might be an option. Going through LBJ Grove will obviously take a little longer but it’s probably better than Potomac Yards.

Columbia Island Marina, then you don’t even have to ride through the grove, just ride over the Humpback bridge to the 14th Street bridge.

Parking is free in the Crystal City garages on the weekends, IIRC.

Not if you forget your bike’s in a roof rack on top of your car

ParticipantFrom the Long Bridge Park website – “Parking is metered Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.”
About as close as Gravelly Point is to DC without the hassle.

IIRC, Emm likes to make sure that her bikes fly off the back of the car instead of ramming them into things on the top of the car.

Oh god that was awful…
Until my husband realized the insurance payout got him a seriously nicer, newer, better fitting bike. Then I wished it had been my bike that flew off the roof…

ParticipantMy son and I will be volunteers at the aid station near the Pentagon. Say hi if you pass through. No, I’m not bitter at all about spending Mother’s Day helping my son get community service hours, why do you ask?

ParticipantRoll Call! Who’s riding DC Bike Ride? Who wants to hang out with me afterwards?

Me! I may be with, or without my husband. If I’m without because my husband is a baby who ditched me to sleep in, I’ll want to hang out for sure. If I’m with him, I’ll probably just ditch him after the ride to hang out anyways since I’ll want to keep riding while he drives himself home. 20 miles isn’t going to be a long enough ride for me on a nice day.

ParticipantWife and I will be there with a buddy in tow. I might ride my mountain bike, pace TBD by the others in my party. What time’re you trying to roll out?
Would love to hang after, but ma takes precedence. We can play it by ear though depending on what time we finish and the mood.

I’m not riding, but I’ll be volunteering at the Start Line. Say hi if you see me! I might be up for hanging out afterward, depending.

ParticipantAssuming we wake up early enough (main access to the start corrals closes at 7:30?!?) I’ll be there with a 5 year old in tow, so as much as I would love to hang out afterwards, I don’t think that’ll be allowed. Or we’ll just end up in the Kids Zone.
