The new Garmin units that sync automatically are pretty low maintenance.

I used to have a high rate of failure with my previous phone (HTC One X), but pairing and syncing now Just Works™ with my Moto G (Google phone).

With the new app it I have at best a 10% success rate on the first try without my intervention. Usually I have to open the ride on the 510 and hit the upload button 3 or more times until it finally works on my iPhone5.

The sync works with Garmin Connect pretty much instantly when I hit save on my Garmin 510 and I’m using a Samsung S4. If you use Tapiriik you can sync Garmin Connect and Strava (and Dropbox) automatically for a few bucks a year. You can also sync them on-demand through Tapiriik but it’s worth the $5 a year for Tapiriik to do it for me automatically.
The only knock on the Garmin 510 is that the touchscreens, at least in one of the batches from 2013, go dead after about a year of heavy use. Mine happened to be in this batch so I’m sending it back for a refurbished replacement today. Outside of that they’re great units and well worth the investment.

ParticipantJust out of curiosity, how quickly do the Garmin’s for cycling connect to satellites? I used to run/ride with the watch (Forerunner 405), but just got sick of how long it took to initialize. I live in Ballston, and so I think the tall buildings around having something to do with the issues, but it just made using the watch useless for me.

My Garmin eTrex 20, not cycling specific, but small handheld GPS, takes just a couple seconds to lock onto a signal (EDIT: once the unit has powered up, which takes about 10-15 seconds). I think it took maybe 5-10 seconds or so in an urban canyon in DC once, but that’s the longest it’s taken me. (EDIT: IOW, thirty seconds from power button press to satellite lock) Given that the eTrex is significantly cheaper than most of the bike-specific Garmins, I assume they have similar or superior performance.
The eTrex, and I assume the newer cycling-specific GPS units, are designed so that they can can use not only GPS but also Russia’s GLONASS system, which makes even more easily satellites visible to the GPS receiver.

My Edge 500 takes somewhere between 15 seconds to two minutes (the longer time is in Rosslyn when I’m blocked by my office building) to first locate a satellite. If I let old ride data accumulate it can take significantly longer than that, so I try make a habit of clearing at least the rides over 15 days old at the beginning of the month.

Participantmost gps receivers these days should be able to get a lock pretty quickly when restarting–assuming they haven’t moved a lot. (they basically cache their location & precompute satellite data.) if you move the receiver a long distance while it’s off, it’ll take a lot longer the next time you turn it on. phones can often cheat and get an approximate position from the nearest cell tower + download some precomputed data and save a lot of the gps acquisition costs.

ParticipantMy 510 takes a few seconds to lock. Well usually it is locked by the time the device boots. Sometimes 10 seconds in parking garage. The Edge 305 I used to use took 30-60 seconds normally, sometimes longer.

ParticipantMy Edge 500s are pretty slow at locating satellites. It depends a lot on cloud cover, buildings, etc. but usually at least 10 seconds, and sometimes over a minute – similar to what consularrider mentioned.

Works great so far. Just tap and ride, then end the ride as usual.

Since I got it, I usually use my Garmin, but occasionally forget it upstairs in my office on trips out for lunch, etc., in which case I resort to my phone. So, I, too, gave the one tap app a try and have used it twice since seeing your mention of it here. Between the app and my new phone, I’m off and riding quite quickly even when using Strava app to record rides. The app is a solution to a problem I didn’t know I had, but it works nicely and makes life a little bit easier.
