ParticipantHow last year’s rookie race looked. Big fun.

Participantdid a few practice laps today
1. Thank god I signed up for the rookie race and not cat 4
2. I wish I had gears, or at least 2 more teeth on the cogseriously thought about riding my son’s geared CX bike, even though it’s 3 sizes too small. would’ve tried except I don’t have a 130mm stem

ParticipantHad a great time, met Tim, Mark & Will on the starting grid. Looked for ACC and Pete but didn’t see them. Thought I saw / heard Culimerc and Arlingtonrider cheering (was that you guys?), you guys are so awesome. Thanks for coming out and cheering, you made me push harder. I didn’t podium but wasn’t last, will do again.

ParticipantThat was a lot of fun. Awesome to see so many Bike Arlington folks out there. Great racing!!!

ParticipantI had a great time too, and enjoyed all the support out there (I heard it, even if I was mostly too busy looking down trying not to slide out or crash). I’ll probably race CX again, although I have to admit I don’t quite get the point of drops on CX bikes? I used them only a couple times and I often wished I could get better braking grip/leverage than from the hoods during the bumpier downhills (I wouldn’t want to grip any narrower and use crosstop levers). I feel like bullhorns with reverse levers would make more sense, but then I’m a newb at it all.
Nice to meet you, dcv. Amazing effort on your SS with that gearing.
The event was really well run. My only tiny gripe was that the rookie race was so short! I was finally getting into how the laps were laid out and collecting beer hand-ups… when it was all over.
That was probably the most BikeArlington folk I’ve seen other than at a happy hour: DaveK, MB, TK, Dirt, dcv, culimerc, acc, arlingtonrider, eminva, jrenaut, and I think Riley Casey (sorry – didn’t say hi).

ParticipantWhat fun! So great to see and cheer on Mark, Tim, dcv and vvill. Sorry I didn’t see you afterwards, dcv. Those guys did great, and it didn’t look easy. Also nice to see acc, Arlingtonrider, Dirt, DaveK and Riley.
Here are some pictures. I missed snapping one of Mark. Guess he was too fast for me.
I wish I had video of the tandem race — that was awesome!

ParticipantI hope this becomes an annual forum event. So many terrific people came out to race and to watch.
It had enough crashes to keep my eleven year old son entertained.
There was great racing.
I’m only sorry that it happens on a Sunday night, homework night in my house, and I had to leave earlier than I planned.Congratulations to Mr. Kelley who only had me take his picture next to his race results five times because I didn’t get a flattering enough shot.

ParticipantMy older daughter really enjoyed watching the races. You can’t quite tell from the angle here, but she stopped digging in the dirt every time bikes came by.

That was tons of fun! And in a beautiful setting as well. I really enjoyed seeing everyone and rooting for all our forum friends. Am definitely planning to go back next year! A few more photos — and more soon.October 22, 2012 at 2:55 am #953936Arlingtonrider
Participant. BikeArlington’s Tim Kelly placed third in the Rookie Race – on a borrowed demo bike. Congrats Tim! (And all of the riders who participated in making this such a fun event to watch.)

Participant I almost left out the Mariachi band. They were serenading spectators and the elite riders as they ran up a flight of steps, and again later as they came over a hill and caught air on a bump. Unfortunately, no cyclists in this photo, so you’ll just have to use your imagination.
Update: Apparently the Haymarket/Seavs team brought its own Mariachi band! Gwadzilla’s blog has a link to a fun video of the band playing while the racers race and the crowd cheers them on. Fun to watch, but I don’t have the technical skills to add a link here. Maybe someone else can?

ParticipantWish I felt up to racing, but there’s always next year. Or next week. Shut up, Mark.
Well-deserved kudos go to DCMTB – they are there working hard all weekend and put on an amazing event every year that’s the highlight of the season.
