It’s in the list but yeah, it’s running TWO days this year! (I’m assuming it’s a reversed course on the second day so the race flow will be different both days.)

I recommend the rookie race if you just want to try one CX race, it’s open to just about any kind of bike, and riders of any age + skill level, and you don’t have to get up early to ride it. It was my first CX race a couple of years ago, and I even got a beer hand-up.

I would be much more tempted to spectate if the races weren’t so far away…

    Sunday is in Hyattsville.

DCCX is next month in Rock Creek Park I think.

And Bikenetic CX is in Oquacan (sp) in December.

See Blog that has some dates: Windy Run: This is Cyclocross!

So what’s your read on the “beginner” races that I see listed on some events. (Most don’t have rookie races though as you noted DCCX does.) They’re listed as Cat 4/5. Now you couldn’t pay me to race a Cat 4/5 crit. Have you watched or participated in any of these beginner CX races?

CX is different. By 1/2 way through the first lap the field pretty much sorts itself out enought so that at anytime there’s only a couple of people around you. much more room, much slower speeds, much softer ground. Short answer is DOOO EEEET!

Also, can’t speak for the rest, but DCCX is awesome as a spectator, too. Easy to get around and watch from different spots, good food and beer, kid-friendly.

…. and after the season there’s also Monster Cross (Feb 22, 2015).

Currently pondering this one. If I go I’ll make a weekend of it. Going down to our place in WB on Friday pm before hitting the race Sunday. I’ll have room for guests ….

    Yeah, what culimerc said, basically.

Though if you want a softer introduction, I believe that DCCX has a cat-5-only rookie race. At least they have in the past. You will see a high percentage of the 4/5 field will be USAC registered riders working to move up in category. You will see a lot of tubular tires with deep carbon rims. The front riders will be fast. There may be crashes (my first cx race was the now-equivalent 4/5 race at DCCX and someone crashed out and took down a few people a quarter into the first lap) but as culimerc noted crashing on grass at 15mph is a lot nicer than on the road at double that speed.

I hear ya. This is the most driving I’ve done all year!

Yeah, I’ve done 3 Cat 4/5 races in addition to the one DCCX rookie race. (I’ve also finished one Cat 5 crit, and after the awful sounds of a crash behind me I decided not to race a crit anytime soon again!)

My read is that CX racing is pretty different. Most people won’t crash dangerously because their handling skills, fitness limits and sanity will prevent them from riding fast enough to really hurt themselves. Of course there’s exceptions, but it’s not like road racing where the peloton pretty much dictates you ride in a big tight bunch at 25mph+ if you want to be competitive/not ride solo, and your heart rate will probably be higher overall in CX, so you will be hanging on and gasping rather than thinking about attacking or shooting a gap. For most riders in most of a CX race you’ll be riding against 1 or 2 other riders who are close to you. Those 1-2 riders might change as you overtake/get overtaken but there’s no peloton to speak of, and there’s only a crowd of riders for the first 1/2 a lap or so.

That said, if you don’t like riding on deliberately unpredictable terrain/conditions and a relatively high probability of mechanical issues, then CX is probably not for you. I really enjoy it because my bike handling/cornering is pretty poor – I can balance fine on a straight line on smooth road but would like to improve my overall bike handling skills, and CX is great for that. And as hozn mentioned, a certain part of the CX crowd (Cat 4/5 included) is straight from the road racing scene – so they carry a similar competitive mentality and high-spending bike/gear habits (although some of them also just race for fun as an off-season pursuit). But there’s still the tradition of a “party in the back” in CX races (moreso in the West Coast races though I think).

If you’re interested in trying out smaller fields, the Sportif series races seem to be less popular – sometimes < 30 racers in the Cat 4/5. @KayakCyndi 96064 wrote:

Cool! I’m pondering it too, but will wait to see how I feel after CX season to make a decision on it. I think at least one of the Team Sticky Fingers ladies is going.

    Can’t see the image :(

There’s also an unofficial CX practice group that meets at Gravelly Pt, right now it is 6pm or so on Thursday (also a smaller Tuesday group I think)

Not as fun as actually doing a CX race, since there’s no tape, but it’s a good race simulation when they have this many strong riders, and the course is reasonably representative of what you may encounter:

The Kid used to play Tier II Travel Hockey. In the “local” CBHL were teams from Richmond, Charlottesville, Norfolk, Easton, Baltimore, and Hagerstown. One season he was the goalie for the Charlottesville team.

    I dont miss hockey travel.

That’s why my youth hockey career came to a grinding halt when at age 10 my family moved from western PA to Hampton Roads. I continued to play/practice for another year or so after we moved, but even then the “local” rink was in Va. Beach 40 minutes from our house w/o bridge-tunnel traffic. Eventually, sadly, it just wasn’t worth the effort anymore. By contrast, the most distant rink we traveled to in PA was maybe an hour and a half away.

I am doing Monster Cross. This will be my third year. I am trying to determine if I should do the short course or the long course. The first year I did the long one and it was fun, but it got a little boring on the second lap. Last year, I did the short course and had a BLAST. Especially because I finished earlier than everyone else and got to start drinking beer! I am also riding a hard tail mountain bike, so I am a bit slower than the folks on CX bikes (which may explain why the short loop was so much more fun than the long one!).
