ParticipantMy coworker saw the aftermath but not the accident. I hear the cyclist is in serious condition, but was talking when they took him away in the ambulance.

ParticipantAwful.
Quote:The truck turned westbound on U St. into the cyclist’s path, they collided and the cyclist went down. because the truck bumper is so high off the ground, the cyclist just goes under the truck and gets dragged, rolled and run over by all three axles. the truck is bouncing around noticeably but the driver doesn’t stop until waived down a good 30 ft later. it was an awful slow motion scene of violence. absolutely brutal. the cyclist was conscious and audible when being loaded into the ambulance – let’s hope he’s okay. Thanks to citizens rushing to and staying on the scene – response was quick and the police did a good job controlling the situation and taking statements.February 28, 2012 at 4:20 pm #936788KLizotte
ParticipantOh my god, the driver wasn’t even aware he’d hit someone!? How is that possible.
I hope and pray the cyclist doesn’t suffer any long-lasting injuries. The fact he was speaking is a good sign.
Many thanks to the good samaritans that stayed and helped.
Keep it slow and safe out there.

ParticipantIt was a flatbed delivery truck. You could run over a small car and not feel it.

ParticipantIt is great that the cyclist was talking, but after that, I almost wish they had lost consciousness – awful.

ParticipantIt was a Capital Bikeshare bike rider. It’s bright red. How can the driver not seeing it?

ParticipantQuote from a bystander who saw the accident:
I was at the scene when this occurred. (Intersection of 11th and U NW)
Capital Bike share bike was heading south on 11th. Truck heading West on U. Truck was in curbside lane and accelerated on orange light, ran the red and struck the bicyclist as he was entering the intersection southbound on 11th.
Cyclist was dragged approx 15 yards west bound on U before emerging from underneath. Truck (not a tractor trailer but a black, dual rear axle, flat bed carrying lumber) then continued another 25 yards before stopping.

ParticipantAccounts from people claiming to have seen it differ – I’ve heard right hook, and I’ve heard running the light.

If that account is accurate, I hope the driver is locked up for a very long time. There’s no room in DC or our suburbs (or anywhere for that matter) for drivers who drive that aggressively and can’t control their vehicles. DC police and prosecuters need do more to provide pedestrian and bike safety from aggressive drivers, and a powerful prosecution would send the right message. People drive like this because they know they can get away with it.

ParticipantLatest I’ve seen is they’re not stating who was at fault. The cyclist’s injuries are “non life-threatening”, so that’s good news no matter what.
Again with that “bike injuries rose 28%” stat while not mentioning that the number of bikes on the road is up by more than that.

ParticipantAccording to this News 8 story the cyclists has a crushed pelvis among other injuries. Police gave the cyclist a ticket for running a red light.

ParticipantI’m glad he’s recovering. But I can’t say the accident and it’s apparent cause surprises me.

I’m not saying the cyclist didn’t run the red, I’m just concerned that the police may have jumped to a hasty conclusion given conflicting eye witness stories floating around.
I just want to choke the cyclists saying they routinely blow thru red lights though on the newscast.
