ParticipantI am deeply saddened to hear of the tragic death of Dave Salovesh and extend my heartfelt condolences to all who knew him. Recently I was in San Francisco where another cyclist was killed due to lack of protected bike lanes. After mourning her, the bike community organized a Human Protected Bike Lanes protest. They set a date and time and lined up along the route where she was killed, wearing T shirts and holding signs demanding protected bike lanes. They do this each time somebody is killed, in addition to the ghost bike. It was a moving demonstration and generated plenty of publicity. Enforcement isn’t enough. Those of us who travel without armor need protection from those who move about in massive, heavy deadly machines. You can see a video news report here: https://abc7news.com/cyclists-demand-safer-streets-and-protected-bike-lanes-from-folsom-to-howard/5197753/
I didn’t know Dave but would be pleased to join a Human Protected Bike Lane action and would bring a dozen cyclists I know from Arlington. How about next Sunday, April 28?

ParticipantI’ve been observing radio silence for a few days (spent Passover with Orthodox people, and my phone was off). I did hear about this terrible thing on Friday, as we were headed there.
I did not know Dave (I may have met him at an event?) But this hit home. Because its been such a loss for several people I do know personally. That he was a bike advocate, and over 50, has also given me the willies (we probably shouldn’t identify more with people who are “like us” but human reality is many of us do) I am sad, and want to extend condolences to everyone who knew Dave.
I know people in DC are renewing their advocacy work, as (I am told) he would have wanted. I would like to inform my own advocacy work in Alexandria with the same spirit, but I am still working out how.

ParticipantThere will be a rally on Friday, April 26th at the Wilson Building at noon to demand action from DC government.
When: Friday, 4/26 at noon.
Where: John A Wilson Building, DC
Speeding drivers have killed two people on our streets in the last 72 hours and put six more in the hospital.
Enough is enough.
Mayor Bowser’s administration has spent the last five years asking for our trust and our patience as they work to make our streets safer.
We are out of both.
If your priorities are in the right place, safer streets are not hard to build, and they are not hard to build quickly. But the Bowser administration has shown that they are not up to task.
Rally with us on Friday to demand immediate action.

A ghost bike will be installed at Florida and 12th NE for Dave at 11 am on Sunday the 21st.
Multiple additional events to follow.
I was out of town for the installation of @Dsalovesh Ghost Bike, but was able to visit it on a memorial ride last Sunday put together by @Dirt of Bikenetic. Several of us on the ride knew Dave from his advocacy, the original FCCI @ Swings, #BikeDC happy hours, Potomac Pedalers (especially the DownTown Breakaway Ride), etc, so many a tear were shed and group hugs given. While mourning, a local resident walked by, conveyed his condolences and recounted for us the scene which he had happened upon shortly after the incident. The Spirit at Florida and 12th NE still remains strong. Shalom.

ParticipantI just came across this story about Dave’s ghost bike. It got smashed by a car yesterday.
https://wjla.com/news/local/ghost-bike-memorializing-cyclist-ruined
We were just there earlier this week putting flowers on it.
Be safe out there.
Hugs,

ParticipantWherever Dave is, I hope he’s laughing at the ghost bike they’re going to put up for his ghost bike.
I sent another letter to the Mayor, my councilmember, and the at-large councilmembers, asking them what they’re doing about DC’s unsafe streets. I urge all of you to do the same. If you don’t live in DC, write to your own elected officials – I’m sure there’s an unsafe street near you that they’re ignoring.
