ParticipantDidnt see it when I came through this morn. During Cherry Blossom season – this is an area to avoid. The volume of both vehicle and pedestrian traffic is over capacity and dangerous.

ParticipantNothing there as I came through a little before 8. Several riders heading south on Ohio Dr there where it has been closed off to motor vehicle traffic heading south. The entire Potomac side of the road was parked up with the cars pointed north, all next to signs saying no parking from 1 am to 9 am.

ParticipantWas Ohio Dr still designated as one-way for that stretch (between the bridge south of the Jefferson memorial and Independence Ave)?
Yesterday when I went through that area there was an electronic sign next to Ohio Dr at the bridge on the southern end of the Tidal Basin saying, “One Way Road / Park on Left Side” specifying that Ohio Dr was a one way road going NW towards the Lincoln Memorial. SE-bound Ohio Dr was blocked off at Independence Ave on the street, but I do not remember seeing any signs for people coming from the Rock Creek Park trail.
I don’t know if the one-way modification was for the weekend or for the rest of the Cherry Blossom Festival, but a cyclist coming from the Rock Creek Park trail trying to go southeast towards the Jefferson memorial might not have known of this traffic change and would have been salmoning without even knowing it. It clearly would have made that stretch of road more dangerous for cyclists, but I do not know if that is the case.

Yes, there the lane was blocked off at at the circle around the John Ericsson National Memorial at the Independence/23rd/Ohio intersection. No sign that I could see for cyclists, but then, I was riding in the other direction. On March 30 I thought there was a sign as well, but as I said, I didn’t notice anything this morning. When I saw this configuration over Easter weekend, I figured it would last for the duration of the Cherry Blossom Festival.

Sign was there this morning, just as it was on Friday, so it’s definitely still a one-way. I’m guessing it’ll be that way until the festival is over. On Friday, I ended up salmoning down Ohio rather than trying to ride the path.

Participantits been set as one-way for at least a week now. I salmoned once early last week when there weren’t many cars parked yet, but will definitely not push my luck anymore. Riding on the trail is tough because of all the peds and moguls, but definitely not safe on the road.
My plan is to either avoid it or plan to slow way down and take the trail.

ParticipantAccording to this goDCgo doc, the one-way enforcement should have only gone through yesterday (April 7): http://godcgo.com/Portals/0/Content%20Images/2013Cherry%20Blossom%20Motorcoach%20Drop-Off_web.pdf
Perhaps it was extended because of the late bloom.
Couldn’t find anything else on DDOT or NPS websites though.

ParticipantYesterday, the sign was in place, along with cones across the road in the southbound lane at the circle. And yet there were still several cyclists salmoning south.

ParticipantOne way again today. As I was waiting at the light to head north across Independence to 23rd, a car turned off Independence eastbound to go the wrong way, despite much whistling from the traffic control ladies posted at the intersection. Not only did the woman go the wrong way, she turned into the northbound stoplight waiting area and then proceeded to keep going down Ohio. Just seconds later, a car coming from 23rd/Memorial Bridge tried to go straight onto Ohio, INTO the line of cars that were waiting for the light (including me), and he didn’t seem to realize this wasn’t going to work out until he was in the middle of the eastbound lane of Independence. Oy.

ParticipantThat link has been updated to say something a bit different:
A bicyclist was seriously injured in an accident in Northwest D.C. Monday morning.
It happened some time before 9 a.m. near 23rd and Constitution Ave. in Northwest D.C.
The bicyclist’s wheel apparently fell off the bike, causing the crash. The bicyclist was flown to an area hospital.
U.S. Park Police and D.C. Fire and EMS responded.

ParticipantSo were there two incidents or only one?

Looks like just one. The witness on the other thread on this said that the rider’s wheel had fallen off, and unsure if that was the cause or result of the accident. It sounds like from the updated news report that it was probably the cause.
Hope the rider is ok.

ParticipantMaybe just one. However, in the previous thread, the poster said it happened after getting off the south side of the bridge, which is not 23rd & Constitution…

Woops. I flipped Independence and Constitution in my head. I guess then I’m as confused as anyone.

I salmoned it before I saw this thread. There was no sign saying it was one way, only cones blocking every way that a car might enter. Being on a bike, I just rode in between the cones. I wondered why everyone was parked the wrong way. Now I know.
