I’m interested in hearing about the personal goals folks set for themselves in cycling (or if you don’t, why not).

I’ve been biking to work twice a week for about a month now and definitely getting into it, especially as I get to know my route better. And tracking everything with Strava really makes it easy to see my metrics.

Here are my informal goals of the moment:

    * Step it up to three days a week instead of two, and eventually make it my default mode all five days. It’s a 36 mi round trip, so I’m figuring this will come easier as my fitness improves
    * Get my inbound time down to 60 min and my outbound time down to 75 min (more uphills in the outbound). I’m currently taking about 68 min to get in and my fastest outbound time so far is 81.5 minutes.
    * Raise my average speed each way … inbound average is 15.5 mph … outbound is about 13 mph. So for now the goal each way is to get avg speed up to the next whole number in each direction.
    * Make it all the way through winter, to make it a year-round deal. So far this has been easier than I’ve thought it would be. With the right gear, even riding in mid-20s temps hasn’t been uncomfortable except for my toes (and I just bought the toe covers).

Thx for your comments, sharing of your goals, and advice on additional metrics to obsess over!

    Brian

I don’t actually know how many miles I did in 2014; somewhere between 6,000 and 7,000, I estimate.

What I DO know is that my bride’s goal is for me to spend less time on the bike and more time doing stuff around the house. 😮

Housework and running…this thread has really gone off the rails and taken a turn toward the terrifying. [emoji47]

and I don’t want to depend on finishing up there (might prefer relaxing on the beach with some drinks with umbrellas in them).

At no time should a person in Washington DC, call Cancun “up there”. It is down. It is south of us, and in this northern hemisphere-centric world, south is down.

It is there, Cancun, where I don’t want to be “finishing up” achieving my goal. The “up” is associated with “finishing,” not with “there.” If you pause just slightly after saying “up” and say “there” as though it’s italicized, you will get my drift.

Also, my geography teacher aunt did not allow her students to use “up” to refer to north nor “down” to refer to south since those references are, of course, completely arbitrary and essentially meaningless–or at least, imprecise. I would never risk her disapprobation by doing so. She would frown at you if she were to see your post.

Oh geez.. I get it now. Sorry!! I totally read it the other way . I can handle a stern frowning. I would hope she’s at least satisfied that I clean up on all the geography categories on Jeopardy. If I wasn’t such a scaredy cat little kid I would have competed in geography bees… I coulda been a contender.

Strava tells me that today’s rides put me at exactly 5500 miles for this year. That’s better than I thought I would do.

My goal, as in the previous 2 years, was to average at least 100 miles a week. I’m currently at 5338, so I made it! I didn’t think I would after only riding about 100 miles through January into mid-March, and missing a lot in the past 6 weeks due to a cold, vacation, and ever-shifting work locales.

I’m not sure I’m going to set the goal that high for next year, but we’ll see.

    I’m a bit over 8k and 570 hours for 2014. I didn’t have a goal this year so I can’t say if I met it.

But I am thinking that next year I want to cut that back a bit to maybe 5-7k and 400 hours? I felt like I rode too much in the summer to the point where I neglected other things on the weekends and burned myself out mentally. I’ve actually cut out most weekend rides since September and it’s been going well. So my plan for next year is to be more selective with my weekend time and not worry about my speed and just keep myself fresh and happy for commuting and available for those special long ride opportunities that may come up if Rod Smith were to invite me on one of his special treks again.

I’m certain you posted somewhere your goal was 7,500 miles and 525 hours. Congratulations on reaching your goals! ;) lol

Ha. OK then. I won’t argue with meeting goals I set but don’t remember :)
