Update: Construction manager is confident this work will be wrapped up on time, despite rains. A mogul-free Custis is in our collective futures!
The trail was striped on the east side this a.m. Looks good!
And while I’ll miss the moguls, there are plenty of other places in the area with sketchy terrain to practice bike handling skills.

ParticipantIt has indeed reopened!!

But, there will be another small detour starting next week near the Scott Street intersection during the week of August 27.

ParticipantIf anyone wants to revisit the last stage of the happy humps/moguls, I have memorialized it (and my no-call pass) in the standard place.

ParticipantI hope the frost heave at the bottom of the hill before climbing up to the moguls (RIP) is still there. It’s the perfect kicker to launch off and go “wheeeeeee!” as most of the lycra clad dudes avoid it.

You will be pleased, I believe. The root heave at the bottom of the hill before the moguls (heading west) remains.

It’s too bad your camera has auto-stabilization. It would be much better without it.

Which, despite it’s usefulness for some, has caused at least one injurious crash I know of.
So it would have certainly been a good thing if it had been included in the project. I find it frustrating that opportunities to extend projects a small amount to fix additional problems or issues almost never seem to happen. It’s got to be a lot more expensive to come back and fix the short section from the end of the moguls up to Lee Highway separately. Why not include it?August 27, 2018 at 1:16 am #1089246ursus
ParticipantI rode the Custis eastward toward DC today. I thought that all of the posts here saying that the trail was open again were fake news because the signs warning that the trail was closed ahead have not been removed.

Yea, forgot to turn that off before filming, though then it would have just been blurry-cam Blair Witch Moguls.

Why not include it?They seem bent on repaving the worst sections every couple of years, letting areas that suck a little less slide until they are the worst, then repaving them. To be fair, this was a bigger job, as your pics from the project attest. Also, the Custis could sit untouched for a decade and still be better than the majority of the MVT, so I shouldn’t complain.

That is in accord with my experience.

The FFX county parkway trail is on a cycle where they maintain the worst parts every 30 years (budget permitting) so yeah, could be worse.

This is a budgetary problem. Next time you see an elected official, tell them it’s important to fund capital maintenance of the trails at a level to fix trails before they fail — roughly double what they fund now.

Another reason to have a fat bike.
