Some friends and I are planning on visiting Hillwood tomorrow (taking advantage if being furloughed). We would like to bike there.

Does anyone know if the trail on along Rock Creek Parkway is open? We want to try this route if possible.

    Thanks.

I have no idea if it’s open, but it is TERRIBLE. I would not recommend biking on it. I think you meant to link a route…

When my family went to the Zoo, we took the RCP trail there (mistake) and coming back we took Cathedral-34th-Garfield-(a little winding to avoid Wisconsin)-37th-Gtown.

I think I read a report somewhere (here?) that the RCP Trail was closed where it goes through the Zoo. Since I think there’s a fence and gate there that can be closed and locked and really shut down the trail, I wouldn’t count in it being navigable.

Having ridden the trail once or twice, I can say I am no big fan, and if there’s a decent on-street route available (like dasgeh’s), I’d opt for that to get where I was going.

    Have fun @ Hillwood!

Yeah. I made the mistake of riding that trail once. It is awful for biking: the surface is terrible, it is narrow, and the pedestrians appear completely ignorant of what to do when a cyclist calls out a pass. I don’t know where Hillwood is, but I tend to ride up MacAurthur, Loughboro, etc. when I am heading over to Beach Dr for a weekend ride.

I don’t know about the specific path, but my understanding is that they closed Beach Drive like they do on weekends and you could easily just ride along it.

Beach is open from Calvert to Broad Branch. The trail through the Zoo is closed as mentioned above. So that means going through the tunnel on a very narrow sidewalk or taking the lane.

    Thanks everyone.

Does sound like we need to take an alternative route through the streets of NW DC.

We are opting for a hike instead and will try to figure out Hillwood another day.

Hillwood is a very cool place to visit but please note that you have to make a reservation ahead of time.
