ParticipantPlease do not insult the world’s pedologists by calling soil “boring”. Maybe you should read a book on soil. I’ll bet it’s not nearly as boring as you think. In fact, I’m sure soil is fascinating.

Huh. Only took 47 minutes for someone to make that joke.
I don’t know if I was over-expecting by thinking it would be much faster, or if the boards are just slow today….

ParticipantIf it makes you feel any better, it only took me maybe 45 seconds (including Googling what you call a soil scientist) after checking the boards for the first time today.

ParticipantFrom an email this afternoon:
The contractor’s operations should allow for maximum use of the trail while minimizing the potential impact to trail users and residents near the trail.
Daytime Operations (will not impact use of the trail):
through Wednesday, September 26, 9:30am to 3:30pm: Drill between Quincy Street and Monroe Street. All of the borings will be drilled off of the trail allowing unfettered access to the trail during the work. If there is sufficient time, boring SW-65 may also be drilled.Thursday, September 27 and Friday, September 28, 9:30am to 3:30pm: Drill between Monroe Street and 18th Street/Johnson Street. All of the borings will be drilled off of the trail allowing unfettered access to the trail during the work. At the conclusion, the rig will be removed from the trail area via the 18th Street/Johnson Street access.
• The rig will be carried on a remotely controlled rubber-tracked platform approximately 4’ wide and 8’ long. It’s maximum speed, achieved during the traverse between borings, is 5 mph or less.
• Where the borings are near the trail (within 5’), we will utilize “Road Work Ahead” signage to warn trail users of our presence. When the rig is in motion during traverse between borings, we’ll place flaggers ahead and behind the rig to ensure users have proper warning of its approach.
• At the conclusion of each evening, the rig will be parked in the wide stretch of park land between the trail and the I-66 limited access fence, surrounded by traffic cones and caution tape.
Monday, October 1, 9:30am to 3:30pm: Drill at western end of pedestrian bridge which crosses over westbound I-66 ramp onto N. Glebe Road…The work…will have no impact on the trail.
Nighttime Operations (one-half of the trail width will be blocked)
Sunday night, October 14, through Wednesday morning October 17, 9pm to 5am between 15th Street and Quincy Street. All of the locations will require that we block half of the trail’s width during the work. A modified version of TTC-35.0, “Sidewalk Bypass”, as shown in the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual, will be utilized to guide trail traffic around the half closure.Wednesday night, October 17, through Friday morning, October 19, 9pm to 5am …between 18th Street/Johnson Street and Lee Highway. All of the locations will require that we block half of the trail’s width during the work. A modified version of TTC-35.0, “Sidewalk Bypass”, as shown in the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual, will be utilized to guide trail traffic around the half closure.
• The rig will be a truck-mounted type approximately 8’ wide and 12’ long. Travel between borings will be kept to walking speed.
• Movement between borings will be accomplished in similar fashion as was performed with the day time borings; flaggers will escort the rig in front and behind as it moves.
• The rig will be removed from the trail property at the conclusion of each shift.
General Comments
Our planned daytime operations should … not be interfering with the use of the trail except for the initial access and final exit from the site. Those should require no more than approximately 15 minutes, each.
Our planned nighttime operations … are intended to allow the Department to assess the subsurface conditions associated with the proposed I-66 Spot Improvement Project…
All of the boring locations to be drilled at night are in locations where there are existing barriers between the work and nearby homes—dense woodlands, retaining walls, hills, etc.

Took me even longer to figure out what you really meant.

I tried to decipher what this will mean for my commute home, but I got bored.

ParticipantTim (at 1519) posted what may have been the best thought out announce we have seen from a contractor looking to use the trail for some necessary purpose. They appear to have thought about the risks and impacts to the other users and have strategies to mitigate them. The fact that they only want half the trail at night is a positive approach.
I think we are looking at the genesis of an example trail sharing plan for others.

I would like to see this remote-control platform!
Aww, even they think their drilling is boring.

ParticipantHas anybody noticed that Dirt hasn’t chimed in? Soil boring must be somewhat offputting.

ParticipantSo that’s what those pink stakes are. I was wondering if Dirt would have claimed a few for himself by now.
