Interesting. You beat me to it. Here’s an interesting way to look at the results, distance ridden vs. average speed. You get bands for 8,7,6, etc laps. You see the two hard boys who did 8 laps. I managed 6 at 18.6 MPH. These bands are sort of like the AA, A, BB, B, etc rankings use by Potomac Pedalers.

It’s interesting that there were quite a few people who did 20+ MPH but only 2-3 laps. I guess they decided to sprint rather than marathon.

One told me “I’ve got my silver and gold, this year I’m getting my bronze and going home.” She’s fast too. Probably in that bracket.

I did the first two laps at 24mph and could have called it a day, but Megan needed a domestique…

Also a number of folks flew through five or six laps then apparently shut it down for their last lap. Some may have run out of gas but I suspect a number of folks finished 6 laps and used 7th lap as warm down.

Ha! I know who that was. Riding an R3SL?

I think we need more data points, such as age, gender, weight class, etc. A. Because I love all the cool charts that you all generate and this would expand the possibilities; and B. I have a few theories I would like to test out . . . .

Here’s another way to look at it. If the “difficulty” of the ride is the distance ridden times the average speed, this is what you get. Horizontal axis is sort of rider number, it just means there was a rider who rode that speed for that distance. I’m the red dot, which is about 80th percentile for the ride.

I also think that some of the laps weren’t actually “laps”. There were a few people we would go by that were skipping going up the Air Force Hill and were just completing a smaller lap…they may have clocked in faster and managed more laps?

I can vouch that even when Tim was spent, he still sprinted up the Air Force Hill to fetch me water so his slower laps should be given “extra credit”. Also, I totally made an attack move on DaveK at the feed zone. (Ok, I really thought he was in front of me and I totally missed he had stopped. It wasn’t until near Rosslyn that he caught up with me and shook his fist at my “impoliteness”. Whoops!) But for all the drafting and in-ride entertainment, he should also be given extra credit, too.

well, I know 7 or the 23 or so people who broke 2:35 for 6 laps are mid 40s, college educated, white suburban fathers weighing in between 175 and 200 lbs only one of whom has any bike racing experience whatsoever. So if your theory involves mid life crisis manifest in expensive bikes instead of sports cars and women, you nailed it.

Looks right in my head. It’s white. I’m absolutely ashamed as a bike nerd that I don’t remember what she rides. Rolling on Zipps if it helps.

Yep. White (with a little black trim) R3SL, Zipp 404s and she rides away from me all the time…

After examining the results again, did the 2nd person actually qualify for 8 laps? He went well over the official cutoff time of 3.5 hrs. Rules be rules, after all.
