ParticipantAre non-hipsters allowed at the Derby? Is there an ID check for being in the cooler-than-thou club? Are diamond-shaped tattoos mandatory?
If I sign up, I’ll go for the competitive race, even if I’m not going to win. I signed up for a charity bike event (time trial) a couple years ago and ended up competing against (and losing to) a Marine Corps athlete of the year (sprint cycling specialist) and a young female pro cyclist who won the US Time Trial Championship last year. So I already have experience losing to elite athletes.
The other reason I would choose the competitive race is the fact that I do not own a Derby hat. Or a vest.

ParticipantPotomacCyclist I will lift a glass of champagne in your honor (full bar available onsite) and toast your courage. As for me it will take every bit of my concentration and effort to look gorgeous as well as considerable self-restraint not to blurt out any four-letter words. Some races are merely inside one’s head.
Vest? In March? You jest. That’s where the leather comes in handy.

ParticipantI would probably use my mountain bike. It would be painfully slow on advertised straightaways but it offers better handling on tight turns than the triathlon bike does. Or maybe I should rent out a CaBi bike for the race. That would give me incentive to finish in under 30 minutes.
I have a BikeGlow light cord on the mtn bike. I wonder if that gets me style points. I could also leave the BarMitts on and go for a geek look. I bet there aren’t too many people riding in indoor races with BarMitts.

ParticipantAny chance that we can see a layout of the courses, particularly for the indoor races?

ParticipantCome one come all to the Diamond Derby! I am pleased that you are working on your fashion for the big day, but don’t be intimidated by the races either! The Open Class will be a fun effort at any speed and the team race, as long as your teammates have a sense of humor about it, you should be good to go.
The course is a big secret so far. The lap will be generally the same for all three races and will be primarily indoors but you will lap around the front side of the building each lap, so you will be going outside each lap as well. And we will make sure you have the opportunity to pre-ride on the day of the event.
Non hipsters are encouraged. I am pretty sure my 2 kids and my rapidly advancing age has cast me out of that select category as well. I also suffer from a lack of diamond tattoos.
Specifically, I am posting to say that if you are racing, please register! We want to see those fields growing in numbers.
And we are looking for volunteers to help with set-up and break-down of the race course and lounge. We also need course marshals and other helpers to make sure that things run smoothly You will be rewarded with an exclusive event staff tee-shirt produced by Art Under Pressure, free entry into the race of your choice, snacks & beverages plus our unending gratitude. Our day will run from 10 AM to past Midnight and we will need help all day! Please contact me, sheba@dcbikeracing.com and sign-up today.
Thanks!

I’ve forwarded this info to the DOT biking listserv group to increase headcount.

ParticipantI won’t be racing, but I’m going to try to bring the little one along to see some of the fun. Just let me know where y’all forum folks are going to be hanging out, so I can steer her clear of you nutty bunch :p

Do Cracker Jack boxes still include temporary tattoos? Are fire engine tattoos considered cool?
I’ll show up for my heat, but I’m not going to stay for the entire 9 hours. That’s a very long day!

ParticipantPre-rode the derby in CC garage yesterday and the dandy ride. Sheba asked me to help marshall the dandy ride and says there are about 300+ people registered for that. 300 people going over the bridge (name omitted) from Jefferson Memorial to VA side…won’t that be a site. The ride in the garage will be fast but looks like loads of fun. Riders should remember they are ‘in a garage’. Sounds like Sheba and Joel mapped out a kids ride and a 6 and under ride. Addison (4) is now fired up to ride her push bike FAST with Sheba’s delila. She asked ‘daddy, can delila ride her bike fast?’ Unfortunately i’ll be with the dandies and wont get to watch them race.
so…sign up, register, do whatever…just get there to promote this first time event, Crystal City and Sheba and hopefully get a committment for a second year.

ParticipantTomorrow is the day! The Diamond Derby in Crystal City!
Details:http://www.crystalcity.org/do/crystal-city-diamond-derbyMy bike is finally coming together, since Mardi Gras, I’ve taken the basket off and reworked it and added approximately 50 yards of rhinestones to my bike. It is quite a sight.

There is something for everyone and the weather should be very good.
Happy Diamond Trails.

annOh….my…..God. I’m almost speechless. You’ve really got to go to New Orleans for the real thing (bringing the bike of course). Or maybe one of those big parades they show on TV.
I think you may have finally topped Dirt.
What kind of glue are you using?
