Harry’s response is pretty dead on. Semantics aside, I plan to show you how to remove the cranks and the spindle/axle to clean and re-lube/grease the system and then re-install it correctly, which as he mentioned is usually the culprit when it comes to annoying creaks and such. The term overhaul is probably overkill for this procedure but for those that have not done this before or have not removed mechanical parts on their bikes it does involve a little more than your normal maintenance issues, replacing the bearings is probably not necessary although at some point it will be… sorry for the confusion. I tend to baby my bikes (other than denting them on a WOD air station… sigh) and thus strip all my bikes naked at least once a year, I actually look forward to those days.

Certainly, I will probably be dealing with it in the next week… I’ll PM you with a head’s up.

I’d be quite interested in this demonstration as well, if that is possible.

Hi all, I have developed a creak (or cracking) sound when I go up a steep hill or when I start out from a stopped position. The sound seems to occur once for each revolution in the big ring and only when I am applying force with my right foot. Once I get going at a level cadence the sound disappears.

I have the same problem. It’s arthritis.

P.S. I see Dismal beat me to the joke. Credit where credit is due.

Interesting thread, I just installed my first new BB last week and also did some first-time cleaning (cranks only) on my road bike @ ~9k miles. I always had an idea in my head about how BB/crank interfaces work but until recently had only worked on square taper cranksets. Working on something hands-on gives you a much better understanding! (In my very limited experience square taper is fine if you don’t change the cranks much, but overall I’m happier with the Shimano BB/cranksets I now have on 3 of my bikes.)
