ParticipantThey’re compatible. In other words, you can run a shimano 11 spd crank/chainrings with a 10 spd drivetrain. Obviously you’ll want to keep running a 10 spd chain on a 10 spd cassette.

Woohoo. Thanks. I was planning on keeping my FSA Gossamer crank but this 105 5800 should be a nice upgrade at a great price and in silver is going to look so sharp w/ matching silver fenders and headset and midnight blue frame.

This is going to be a very exciting bike week for me.

Cool – as with any new crank (regardless of whether you’r mixing and matching 10/11 spd) you’re going to want to re-setup the front derailleur, too.

Yup. I’m moving all non-frame components from existing bike to new frame. The chainstay is 460mm up from 425mm so I anticipate needing to add a link. I have the bottom bracket tool and that seems simple enough. My biggest concern is setting the crown race on the fork (I’m going to try the PVC pipe trick) but if I get stuck I’ll bring that to the LBS for help. Everything else seems very straight forward. Thanks again!

Well, at least you have the only tool you need for bicycle maintenance.

Well, to be honest I borrowed the BB tool from Ryan H. and am going to hit up my neighbor for the PVP pipe and a rubber mallet. I do have a set of allen keys though so it’s all good.

ParticipantJust curious, is the opposite true? Will a 10 speed crank work on an 11 upgrade (shifters, RD and wheels)? Shimano

Yep! Just use a 11 spd chain and it’ll be fine.
As I said above, you’re going to want to re-setup the front derailleur regardless. The only time that 10 speed/11 speed compatibility issues crop up are between SRAM 10 and SRAM 11 – the “new” 11 spd Yaw front derailleurs are supposed to be only compatible with the 11 speed 4-arm cranks due to shift ramps/pins, etc. Never tried a SRAM 11 spd crank with a 10 spd drivetrain or vice-versa, but my gut says it’d work well enough so as not to be an issue.
