Runway 15-33 at Reagan National Airport will be realigned, to shift it farther to the southeast. On the SE end, the runway will be extended into a new area to be reclaimed from the Potomac River through infill. The NW end of the runway will be pushed back farther away from the GW Parkway and the Mt. Vernon Trail.

It doesn’t appear that the MVT will be affected. But I thought it would be useful to post this item, in case people wondered about the construction that is set to start next week. The project could last for 2.5 years, until late 2015.

“The work should not affect air travel because the runway is rarely used” – Not sure I would agree with that statement in story. I see planes landing there probably once every other week or so. And many more taking off during cold months from that NW corner.

Yeah, others had issues with that line too. When I ride or run in Long Bridge Park, just to the NW from that runway, I see planes landing and taking off every day. Maybe not as frequently as from the main runway, but it’s a lot more often than “rarely”.

The first time I got buzzed by an aircraft landing on that runway, while I was riding on the MtV trail, I nearly had a heart attack.

Where’d THAT come from? There’s an east/west runway???

    :)

Right on cue, when I was riding home last night they were taking off from the NW corner there. Yah, definitely not ‘rare’ly.
