“Click to embiggen”? There is a perfectly good word that already exists, i.e., enlarge. Call me a pedant, but for a county web page, using proper words seems more appropriate.

    Otherwise, I like the article.

Embiggen is a perfectly cromulent word.

    You’re a pedant.

Loosen up, have a little fun. Embiggen is a perfectly cromulent word!

Fun? Can’t be having any of that at work. Bosses would get suspicious.

During SafeTrack, the Bikeometer has seen a 76% increase (that’s 1000+ more bikes each day) over last year!

So has some or all of that increase been maintained now that Surge 1 is over and the Orange/Silver are back to normal?
It would be great to know if some or many of the commuters who took to biking during those two weeks are still doing it.

Very anecdotal, but I’ve seen a whole bunch of bikes on the WOD this week, way more than I would expect during a holiday week where the weather turned steamy.

Also, how are counts along the parts of the blue line that have been affected by subsequent surges? And how do they stack up against previous stats? Have we seen record ridership along those sections like we did along the Custis?

Haven’t had time to dig into this much.

Feel free to take a look yourself and let us know what you come up with: http://www.bikearlington.com/pages/biking-in-arlington/counting-bikes-to-plan-for-bikes/counter-dashboard/

These data cannot be correct, as I’ve been told that cycling is a recreational pursuit and not part of a “serious” commuting network.

    Tim’s original #s:
Average Week in June 2015: 6543
June 6-10 (first week of SafeTrack #1): 11537

    New, additional #s:
    6/13-6/17 (Remainder of SafeTrack #1 + one non-SafeTrack Friday): 9312
    6/20-6/24 (SafeTrack #2): 7919
    6/27-7/1 (No SafeTrack): 8449

Average weekly ridership for the 1st two weeks of July in 2015: 6971
Average Weekly ridership for the last three weeks of May 2016: 7800

On the surface, it appears that the numbers have come down a bit. We’re not as high as we were during SafeTrack #1, but depending on which starting point you’re comparing to – June of last year, May of this year or July of last year – we’re either back to normal or still elevated to some extent. Weather is such a huge determinant of cycling in Arlington, though, that a shallow analysis could be very misleading. It could be that ridership has not dropped nearly as much as we should have naturally expected it to given the change in weather conditions.

I saw more cyclists coming out of the Huntington neighborhood of Alexandria – this morning at least. Granted I’m a late riser compared to many in this forum. ;)

I’m guessing though if the numbers turn out lower, it’s because of summer vacation. I and a bunch of colleagues took time off around 4th of July weekend – both time before and after the actual holiday.
