One option in Strava is to use different equipment. So if you really wanted to calculate commuting miles, you could have 2 of the same bikes listed, just name one “commute”, then you can look at how many miles on that piece of equipment. It’s easy to edit rides to change which bike was used.

Yeah, but Strava could simply total up commute-tagged rides for you! I like the separate bikes because not only can you track mileage per bike, you can add gear and easily track how many miles it’s been since you swapped out a chain or even mounted a different set of tires.

The bike? yeah I bought one just for commuting and I bought bags and a rain suit and some cold weather gear.
Those are also costs that won’t recur every year, either. My commuter bike is on it’s 14th year of year-round commuting and it cost me less than $400 new. The panniers are at least as old as the bike. Although I’m on my second rain jacket in 12 years, the rain pants are 12 years old. Once you’ve got everything, it’s just maintenance and consumables and those are cheaper. (Not to mention less time consuming if you do it all yourself.)

ParticipantI commute for one reason, it allows me to be on my bike more. Everything else is a bonus.

ParticipantToday marks the first time I’ve ridden 5 work days in a row. Granted, the weekend was wedged in there, but I had two days off last week for Sandy, otherwise it would’ve been my first full work week. Overall, Strava is showing about 3k miles since I started using it in April, so I’m thinking I’m actually at about 4k for the year, and I’d say about 1200 of that is commuting. Hopefully I can double that next year, now that I’m in a more bike-commute-friendly location.

ParticipantI discovered that I used my transit subsidy so sporadically, my agency cancelled my benefits! When I noticed and called, they said they though I might have quit (or something even more permanent) so they unilaterally cancelled my transit subsidy enrollment. Now I have to re-enroll.

ParticipantI’ve been wondering about that. I think I took the subway a couple of days ago, for the first time in months.

I found it an overrated experience.

You think you took the subway a couple of days ago? The experience was so traumatic that it is partially/mostly blocked from your memory?

It should be
I swear I’m going to start wearing gloves and a mask on Metro. Or a bunny suit.

ParticipantAfter My Tracks and Sports Tracker, I’ve started using Endomondo. I like the way it picks out your fastest portions, and highlights them on the map. Can anybody compare Endo with Strava? I hope I’m not straying too far off topic into how we get the commuting numbers…

If the posts in the National Bike Challenge thread are evidence, you’ll find very few Endomondo users here, myself included. It’s not awful or anything, but I found the interface to be really clunky and requiring too many clicks just to download your rides. I think for casual users, it probably works okay, but it’s hard to beat Strava for detailed analysis of your rides, and the social networking aspect of Strava also is superior IMHO.

They deactivated my Metro benefits a couple years ago since I wasn’t downloading. However, I still had to formally quit the program before I could attempt to use our new bike reimbursement program that started in January. I still need to submit my first SF-1164 and supporting memo with receipts to see how the process works. I’m well over the annual $240 amount with true commuting expenses on maintaining the two bikes I use for commuting, and that doesn’t even include the basics like tires & tubes/chains/cassettes/chain lube. Guess that’s what happens when both cranksets need replacing during the same year.
