ParticipantAwesome! I wish I could calculate all that and have such a great number at the bottom. Unfortunately I’d have to add the bike I bought for commuting, the extra gear I just HAD to have, the tools and toys that were absolute necessities to complete my commute, and all the extra food I ate so I could keep my shape (round).

ParticipantI don’t have specific numbers in such detail, but I put the odometer on my bike 2/13/12, and I just hit 1900 miles this morning on my way to Friday Coffee Club.
However, I’ve also noticed recently that my caloric intake (mostly of the hoppy variety, I think) is again starting to outpace my bike mileage, so I may have to adjust.

I dont include the food and beer, cause knowing me I would’ve eaten it anyways. The bike? yeah I bought one just for commuting and I bought bags and a rain suit and some cold weather gear. I probably would’ve ended up spending that money on cycling anyways knowing me. I just would’ve had deep rim wheels on the road bike and some other odds and ends instead. The only actual consumables were punctured tubes and broken spokes (<$100). Oh, and I have just finished off one tire, I should kill the other in the next month or so.

The way I see it, I should be able to buy a new bike with all the money I saved 😎
I am a full subscriber to this way of thinking! So the more I ride, the more money I can put towards a new bike…. right?!?!?!

ParticipantVery nice. I wish there was an easy way to aggregate commuting miles in Strava, since you can tag rides as commutes.

ParticipantIncluding the non-commutes, for 5 months, 208 rides (probably 100 days commuting) and 1600 miles.
Savings for me: $0. (Actually ~-$150 for tires, tubes, new used wheel, mandatory $2 beers at happy hour.)
Savings for my agency: $600 in unused transit subsidy.
(5 months is just the time I’ve been on Strava; I’ve been commuting by bike for more than 2 years.)

ParticipantMonday will be my 150th commute by bike this calendar year – I have ridden 100% of the days I am in town and at work.
I’ve ridden about 3500 miles
Because I don’t drive my fully amortized truck much (maybe 1100 miles for 2012), the insurance costs more than the fuel.

ParticipantI was only tracking based on purchasing a new bike and some new equipment last year against the amount I would have spent roundtrip on Metro $7 or to park $10. That was about 13/14 months ago or so. I figure it only took me until mid-to-late Spring to break into the Black and every ride since is money in my wallet (or rather savings account to buy a house). Some of my non-cycling coworkers/friends/family have decided to give a whirl on occassion as they see me enjoying it and saving money. We have a multiplier effect if we just explain it to people. In my case it’s easy to say: the time difference is literally less than 15 cumulative minutes per week vs driving and on par with metro, it’s $7-10 a day in savings (calculate in tuneup, tubes, tires, etc and maybe it goes down $1 a day, but still significant), it’s a good workout, and a very scenic and enjoyable route where the biggest problem is joggers and debating whether to watch a plane land or not at night.

ParticipantCycling doesn’t save me any money. My employer pays my transit costs and I live and work very close to Metro. I ride for lots of reasons, mostly to do with sanity (on a bad day) and happiness (on a good one) but saving money isn’t one of them. I do think it’s a powerful argument for someone who’s spending $7-10 on Metro each day out of their own pocket though.

ParticipantAccording to strava, 0% of my bicycle commuting was done as a kite surfing session. I suck.

ParticipantI know that I usually mark commute rides as “Commute” on Strava but don’t see an easy way to summarize those values.
A more upfront benefit to me is that every day I bike all the way into work, I save $10. It’s because my only alternative to biking is taking Metro (bus + rail) and it costs me $5 each way or $10 roundtrip.

ParticipantAny money that I save by riding instead of driving is spent at FreshBikes and Bikenetic… and then some. If I were driving, I’d be spending that money and more at New German Performance, so I guess it balances out. If I were riding Metro, I’d likely be in a mental institution.

ParticipantJust did my 150th bike commute this calendar year (with no metro or car commuting). I am at 1000 miles more than all of 2011. Way cool!

ParticipantOne option in Strava is to use different equipment. So if you really wanted to calculate commuting miles, you could have 2 of the same bikes listed, just name one “commute”, then you can look at how many miles on that piece of equipment. It’s easy to edit rides to change which bike was used.

Participantsome of my numbers: commuted by bike 182 days this year, 64 trips by bike from Fairfax to DC (all else on bike/train/Cabi or Bike/Bus/Bike). 4062 miles (goal of 4414 which is double my last years miles). I have crossed the Potomac on Bike 282 times, (most at 14th street bridge, but also Roosevelt Bridge, Chain Bridge, and Wilson Bridge). Fastest time from FFX to Washington Navy Yard (1:33), Fastest time to return (1:55). Number of trips to Friday Coffee Club: 9.
See you out on the trail!
