I also recommend doing a lap around the Pentagon. It’s no Hains Point, but it will do in a pinch. I’ll try to take a picture in the next day or two, but construction has begun on the 27 Bridge. A chain link lined temporary path is being put up. It currently looks a bit sketchy and narrow, but won’t know for sure until it’s fully up.

Here’s the temporary trail going up along the 27 trail by the Pentagon.

I don’t know, honestly, if I’d go the western route (through Rosslyn) or the eastern route (near the Pentagon), but I do know I would avoid the west-side-of-50 trail. So if I were to do the Eastern Route, I’d stay on the east side of 50, then take Pershing to Fillmore to the secret trail (Long Branch Trail). See here. It’s a little long than staying along 50, but doesn’t add any hills, and has the advantage of not having to stop and look back over your shoulder to see if cars are coming.

If I were to take the eastern route, I’d probably take stay in the District and take Memorial Bridge (as shown here) or even 14th Street, depending on where she’s coming from, shown here)

I’m digging the Pershing to Filmore route!

I agree on avoiding the trail along the westbound side of 50. Since you are going to come as far west as Fillmore anyway, I’d instead recommend climbing either

    a) Wilson Blvd (possible route: Fort Myer – Nash – Wilson – Garfield – Washington – Fillmore) or
    b) Custis Trail (possible route: Fort Myer – Custis – Veitch – Key – Bryan – Danville – Wilson – Garfield – Washington – Fillmore)

Crossing 50 once is bad. Crossing it three times is torture. This is why I’d like to see the south(east)-side 50 trail extended either to the 2nd St bridge or over to Fillmore. I ride between Penrose and Key Bridge often, but I never use this trail because it’s too much of a pain to get to and from it.

That said, since you’re going to Foxcroft Heights and not Penrose, I would take the eastern route instead. With the western route, you’d be heading in the same direction as Columbia Pike rush-hour traffic between Courthouse and Orme.

Eastern route is the best… but make sure that you tell her that you scoped out the Western route and that it was really dangerous and that you risked your life for her, cause she’s all worth it.

Thanks y’all. I’m going to send these notes to her and make a rwgps when I have a minute and share it here for more debate:). I’m please the general response wasn’t “oh don’t ride there”…. I’ll probably usher her down there Sunday for a nice recovery spin after I completely destroy myself Saturday:)

I recommend you take it easy with low miles on Saturday so that you’re not too tired to show her around, all for purely unselfish reasons of course.

Results may vary if it turns out that she’s playing Freezing Saddles…

I plan on riding into work tomorrow but haven’t ridden along the MVT after a major precip/freeze event like last night’s. Any reports from tonight’s ride home? Any pointers for tomorrow morning?
    Thanks!

Low 20s overnight: Re-freeze will make it icy. Personally I wouldn’t attempt it without studs and MTB tires but YMMV (e.g. Steve O)

Yeah, that’s what I was afraid of…trying to manage the risk of riding in (and my guilt over not riding more for BAFS lately) so I can roll in CCWNS #3. Hoping to hear “drains well, dry as popcorn” :)! Looks like bringing the bike on the Blue Line may be the way to go. Thanks vvil!

Np! I don’t ride the MVT often but with any route even if 99% of it is clear, that 1% of unseen ice can really get you. I’ve crashed enough times on ice not to want to do it again!

I think I am gonna go mountain biking tomorrow! If the freeze is hard enough that might be the fabled fast snow.

Edit: sorry, I posted this on the wrong thread :-)

I rode 14th St Br to Crystal City Connector home this evening. Largely clear (>50%) of the trail width except for the shady areas. Portion along fence north of DCA north hanger had a lot of plowage thrown onto the trail by the GWMP plows.

You may have to flintstone a bit but I’d do it. Not sure what it is like south of Crystal City.

While the 14th St Br wasnt cleared this morning, it was clean this afternoon (thanks DDOT).

I was on my hybrid with a 32mm rear and a studded 35mm in front.
