ParticipantFrom Falls Church to Downtown – I’m doing pretty poorly, is their a happiness map though? Because I’m pretty sure I would be rocking that.

ParticipantMy zip code is stating 31.4 minutes and my ride usually takes me 45-50 minutes, so I feel pretty good considering the additional 15 minutes will probably keep me alive for an additional 15 years….. bugger I just jinxed that didn’t I ?

ParticipantMost of my neighbors must not work downtown, because there’s no way I’d make it to DC in 30 minutes except on a holiday. My experience has been about an hour for driving or Metro, and an hour and 15 minutes by bike.

ParticipantMy neighborhood (20009) is 27.9 minutes. That’s actually pretty close for me – a little shorter in the morning when the whole route is downhill.

Same here, but in my case I think a lot of Vienna folks work in Tysons, so the one hour commutes and five minute commutes average out to 29 minutes. I noticed that we were not much higher than the 26 minute commutes for the couple of zip codes I checked in cachet-superior Arlington.

ParticipantOk, 28.7 minute average commute for 22205. Since I don’t cross the Potomac I can shave a little off that by bike, it’s about right for my walk/Metro combo, and why would I drive (note, my wife is at the mothership and she averages just over 30 minutes in her carpool).

22205 to the mothership takes me 30 minutes in the AM, 35 in the PM (assuming I take the direct route). The one day my wife dropped me off at work, I think it took about 18 minutes. Given that I ride past a pretty large backup on the TR every day, I think we were lucky that day.

You can not get from Vienna to Tysons in five minutes without a helicopter or sirens.

Participant22201 to Sterling
60 miles RT by car: ~1:45-2:30 (easy AM but awful, horrible I-66 time in the PM)
50 miles RT by bike: ~2:30-3:30March 8, 2013 at 5:09 pm #964123eminva

Well, I might have exaggerated slightly, but depending on where you live and when you leave, you can get there close to that. As a swim mom, I know you can get there from the middle of Vienna at 5 a.m. on Sunday in that time. Evening rush from center of Vienna to Tysons — I agree, forget about it.
I was also trying to be discreet and not mention another large, local employer that might hold down average commute times — we have a ecret-say facility in the middle of ienna-Vay and some ooks-spay might be able to walk out their back doors and be there in ive-fay minutes.

ParticipantMy commute of 40-50 minutes is a bit longer than the 26 minutes average for my zip. That being said, I think we all probably compare ourselves not to our neighbors, but rather to our own commute via other methods. My metro + shuttle ride is around 1hr-1:15. So riding is much quicker. Driving would be around 20 minutes or so in the morning, and 30-1hr in the afternoon, so I guess I could save some time if I got a car.
As an aside, I love when people here ask me how long it takes me to get to work, and I say something like 40-42 minutes in the morning and 45-52 minutes or so in the afternoon. Gotta love the consistency of the bike commute.

Just taking the shuttle from Rosslyn to Foggy Bottom this morning was 25 minutes!

ParticipantHmmm… The average of 31.4 minutes for my Zip definitely makes sense to me. In the time I’ve lived there I’ve had commutes of under 10 minutes (2 miles) to up to and over an hour (driving – afternoon). There are plenty of employers within the 10-20 minute zone (at least for morning commute) and DC is under an hour if you can use HOV in the morning. I get my son to school in about 45 minutes, home to NE DC. I’d be at my own office 15 minutes (or more) sooner (NW). The trip home takes about an hour and five to an hour fifteen, with rare exceptions (higher and lower).
Cycling is about an hour and 20 minutes in the morning and an hour 35 on the way home (Darn Arlington Hills!).
