This is where dasgeh tells you about “the nicest commute in Washington” by taking Irving to 2nd and going through the cemetery via Ft. Myers’ Hatfield Gate. Unless that’s been closed.

If I didn’t take the Ft. Meyer route, I think I would just ride Irving all the up to Wilson, take that to Veitch, hop on the Custis to Key Bridge, and down M/L.

Why good morning. Shawn was almost right — the best commute in Washington is from Fort Myer through the Cemetery — which is still open, but still only allowed in the downhill direction.

Luckily, there is light at the end of the reparing the trail along Rte 50 tunnel, so you have lots of options. None of them involve riding on Columbia Pike for very long — at the very least your friend can take advantage of the lovely bike boulevards north and south of the Pike.

But without further ado: options
1) Aforementioned best commute in Washington (Fort Myer –> Cemetery –> Memorial Bridge, etc) 6.1 miles
2) Irving –> Wilson –> Iwo Jima –> Memorial Bridge 7.1 miles
3) Little sidewalk riding on the Pike –> learn to hate the “27 trail” –> Memorial Bridge 6.0 miles
4) This will be nice once the trail on the east side of 50 is complete – 6.8 miles
5) I can’t show this on google map correctly, but the trail on the west side of 50 will be complete soon, and this kinda shows how you’d go, though you won’t cross 50 at Pershing and cross back at Rhodes – 7.0 miles
6) Up to Courthouse then down to the Memorial Bridge – 7.0 miles
7) Through Courthouse –> Veitch –> Key Bridge 6.1 miles
Through Courthouse –> Custis Trail –> TR Bridge 6.7 miles

*I’m kinda surprised at how close the mileage is for all of these.
