Work crews have set up a bike detour, running alongside the car detour route. Part of the bike detour runs in a protected section of the road, in effect a temporary cycletrack. Other sections have rough patches. Plus there is a signalized grade crossing of Washington Blvd.
It appears that the center section of the old bridge is already gone, as of yesterday. Large cranes with pneumatic drills were chipping away at the exposed sections on both sides of Columbia Pike. We’ll see how well the work crews clean up the road and sidewalk in between the weekend demolitions. By next month, there will be a lot more clearance under the bridge, but the sidewalk might still be in rough shape, until the project is completed next year. Maybe they can add a smoother temporary path under the new bridge once demolition is complete.
