It was one of those experiences where humanity really came through. I found it quite touching how for albeit a brief moment, driver and cyclist were not at odds with each other as they were both very concerned for each other’s well-being. It really made the best of a potentially devastating situation.

No kidding. I’ve lived in West Springfield close to that intersection for over 25 years. I haven’t seen so much as a flat tire in my neighborhood, but the first time he rides there he sees a collision turned into a positive sign of humanity!

I’m going to be really concerned if I see “Master of Disaster” show up under my username on the forum

ParticipantSounds like the infrastructure failed both of these women. Please report it so the powers that be can know that the road design is deficient.

Why do you think this was caused by an infrastructure problem? I’m familiar with that intersection and the roads in that neighborhood, and would be curious to know what you think is deficient.

I don’t know the intersection at all,but from the post, the driver was distracted by the interaction with Bobco and hit a cyclist lawfully using the crosswalk. Would a protected bike lane for Bobco have helped? Or signage to remind people driving to look for people using the crosswalk? Or a light to regulate the conflict point?
Or maybe the problem was user error – the driver screwed up – but then we need better driver training and the infrastructure we build needs to take that into account.
Whatever the cause, it should be built into the planning, which can’t happen if no one reports it.
