ParticipantI’m a huge fan of moose mitts and bar mitts. Both are great, and only require the use of very light gloves even in super cold weather. I bought the moose mitts first, then was gifted some bar mitts, which I now like better in wet or real windy conditions. Cold hands are never an issue anymore. (p.s. There’s no need to have both – I just do.)

ParticipantSeriously though, this thread is depressing me. Can’t we just have more summer?

Can’t recommend bar mitts enough. They let you wear much lighter gloves so you retain finger dexterity and still keep you warm.
I have sufficient dexterity with the lobsters. What I’m hoping for is a better balance of windproofness and breathability.

ParticipantI need to fix the cold foot thingy. Last year, I got by with a combination of neoprene toe covers and a huge box of hand warmers that a neighbor moving to Miami put out on the curb one night. But it’s not really enough. I’d love the Lake winter boots, but at over $200 I’d like not to sleep on the couch even more.

ParticipantThanks for all the glove suggestions! I will look into grabbing some wool glove liners and checking out some bar mitts. (If they are easily interchangeable between bikes, I think that might be the way to go.)
As for the feet, I wish I could get some winter cycling boots! Unfortunately, they just do not make them in small and narrow enough sizes for me (I have tiny feet, size 37.5 narrow). Even wearing thick wool socks, the men’s sizes are way too big. I will try the boots and flats (I am used to wearing flats on my MTB’s, so it is not a big deal to switch) and see how they do. Plus, I need a new pair of winter hiking boots, anyway. 😎

I have a pair of the Northwave Celsius Arctic boots in size 38. You are welcome to try them on if you would like, and I might be willing to sell them to you if you like them and they fit. I wore them for one winter and the start of a second before finally admitting they were a tad on the small side for me to wear with thick winter socks, and bought a second pair in size 39 which works much better for me– I’ve kept the 38’s for use with thin socks on cool and rainy days, but that’s not really enough use to justify keeping them, mostly I’ve just been too lazy to try to sell them. Northwave also makes them in 37 (though not half sizes in our size range:(, and not in widths) if the 38 is too big for you, just as info. They are about the only winter boots I was able to find in my size two years ago when originally hunting for them, though it is possible there are others out there now.

ParticipantBar mitts are interchangeable if it’s the same style of bicycle, eg road with drops, or hybrid. I think I got mine for like $50. It seemed a little pricey until I realized that i wore my lightest gloves underneath them on a polar vortex day and my hands were sweating. It’s particularly helpful if you have a long commute.

Is THAT what bar mitts are? Cause every time someone mentions them, it reminds me that NOW I AM A MAN.

ParticipantNow that we have started the annual discussion of Moose Mitts, let’s think about feet. On my commuter I use old-fashioned toe clips. Has anyone tried covers that go over the toe clips, something like this:

ParticipantCross my heart, hope to die, stick a needle in my eye; I will never ever wear Gore-Tex Pac-Lite until it is below 45 degrees. I am a ball of sweat.
Good mental note.
