    Greetings!

Next year I will be participating in a couple of firsts: my first long distance bike ride AND my first charity bike ride. Although biking is a huge part of my life, I’ve never actually done a long distance group or charity ride. So I have decided to step up my game for next year: on May 19 – 23, I will be joining the Climate Ride to bike from NYC to DC!

The Climate Ride is a charity event that raises money for non-profit organizations that focus on environmental and sustainable solutions AND bike advocacy (you can’t really have one without the other :o). In order to participate I must raise at least $2,400…and I have decided to raise all of that money for WABA!

I am very eager to take part in the race, but will need some support along the way. Donations are greatly appreciated (by me and I’m sure WABA will also be happy) BUT I will be in the market for a road bike so support in the form of advice (as I will be tapping into the wealth of knowledge and experience from everyone in the forum about a bike purchase) is also appreciated!

Check out my fundraising page if you would like to donate :)

Thanks everyone for your support, in whatever way shape or form, thanks for being a valuable member of the forum and most of all, thank you for biking :)

Coolness! That is a great choice of a ride to do. It is fun and there are a lot of great people.

This forum has been good for fundraising. I’ll certainly contribute after the holidays. I found Facebook to be a great resource too. Twitter was okay for me… I haven’t had as good results with it in comparison to Facebook.

Something like the climate ride, you can canvas local and even non-local businesses too. I did a little of that last year with the Tim Johnson Ride on Washington. I’ll be doing that again in 2012. I’m happy to share what works for me and what doesn’t as I start that process. The fundraising for TJROW probably won’t start until after the holidays.

I have a similar amount that I need to raise for my ride, though less time to do it.

Look forward to seeing how things go and helping out where I can.

    Have fun!

    Pete

Congrats on going big for your first major group ride! You could have done a 60 mile Diabetes ride and been happy but this one should give you memories to last a lifetime. The ride itself sounds really cool and it’s a cause after my own heart, having a Master’s in climate science and all… so sad these days how scientists and years of research are treated like garbage just because some talking heads on tv consider themselves experts. Best of luck! Do you know what route you’ll be taking? I rode from Boston to DC in August and there was some really cool countryside in NJ and eastern PA that I wasn’t expecting.

My wife, her sister and I raised more than $10,000 for Sarcoma research at Dana Farber this year through the PMC, but most of it was from family, friends and coworkers. We did NOT have much luck with social media for some reason. Maybe we don’t have the right kind of friends like Dirt. This year we’ll need to raise more like $12,000 so we’ll have to figure out some new sources of funds.

I’ll be interested to hear updates on how training is going and how you’re feeling as it gets closer.

Great choice! I guess I’ll see you on the ride, then. I’m also new to charity rides — although not to multi-day tours — and wanted to hear more about fundraising strategies. I know that I’ve usually only sponsored others after an email appeal (not just a Facebook post), so I’ll send an email out over the next week. Any other suggestions?

I’m pretty new to fundraising a lot of money, I’ve done it in the past but gotten away with mostly family donations to make the cut. Since I’ve tapped them out, I’m also looking into new strategies. I’ve heard that hosting happy hour meet ups dedicated to the cause is a great idea where you charge $5 at the door or something and all that money would go to the fundraising efforts (I’m sure organizing some sort of discount for drinks might help too). Teaming up with others to raise the money is another strategy, one which I’ll be employing at some point.

The only thing Facebook did was get people to “like” my post – it didn’t generate any new donations. So far it hasn’t been helpful. But I’ll let you know if I discover other ways to raise the money.

Zanna is riding for WABA, the climate, and an Arlington team on the National Bike Challenge. Please pick a reason to support her and push her fundraising over the top!

Thanks so much for the support and the shout out Dana! I really appreciate it.

Yes – I am indeed very close to the fundraising goal and I WILL reach it! Tomorrow night I am hosting a silent auction where you can bid on some great items (6 month membership to Arganica, New Belgium swag, designer sunglasses, restaurant gift cards, and more!) and the money will all go to my ride (which in turn goes to WABA).

The event is at Mellow Mushroom and goes from 6pm – 8pm (their happy hour ends at 7pm) and we’ll be on the second floor. I will have a couple pizzas there to lure in anyone who loves pizza as much as I do (especially free pizza). I also want to reiterate the finale on May 23. Check Dana’s link – it will be quite a sight, so hopefully some of you can make it! :)

Spread the word, bring your friends, family, babies, pets, whoever (actually, you might not be able to bring pets, so scratch that)!

    Thanks! <3
