I think the new bike lanes on Clarendon Blvd. are great, but does anyone know if the county is planning on resurfacing the road between Garfield and Cleveland? I am guessing not, since they already painted the new lines and resurfaced another stretch of road. The problem is they gouged out the old lane paint, so to ride outside of the door zone as they intended, you have to ride on a really rough patch of road. It seems like it would be really easy to slide, especially for those with thin tires. Once we get into winter, I think ice could also build up in the grooves. thanks for any info!

    I noticed the same problem.

Both of you should report the pavement issue on the County’s pothole request form:

    http://www.arlingtonva.us/departments/environmentalservices/cpe/concrete/resform.htm

Even if it isn’t something that can’t be patched, it might help motivate a total resurfacing sooner than later.

FYI: This is the paragraph I wrote on the “report a pothole” form linked above for the stretch between Clarendon Blvd between North Fillmore and North Cleveland.

“I recently biked this short stretch of the new bike lane on Clarendon and noticed that the area where the old striping had been removed during the recent re-striping has not been smoothed over (it has a “gouged out” texture). This gouged out “stripe” forces most cyclists to move rightward toward the door zone or else leftward into the car lane itself.

While I’m thrilled to see that the County has made much needed safety improvements to the Clarendon Blvd, not smoothing the pavement effectively reduces the useable width of the lane.

Please fix if possible. Thank you.”

To those of you that use the Clarendon bike lane regularly and see this as a problem, please send a note to the County folks. The squeaky wheel gets the oil!
