Chinese New Year is coming up on February 1, so I’m planning a themed ride on Sunday, January 30.
We’ll start at 801 Wharf St. SW, where I’ll have some treats from Chefs Stopping AAPI Hate to share. Meet at 3:00 p.m., roll at 3:15 p.m. We’ll end at the Kennedy Center’s REACH Winter Lanterns display. In between, we’ll stop at three sites associated with AAPI history, including one home that was the site of a notorious triple murder that ended up changing the U.S. criminal justice system.
Exact route still TBD, but expect about 10 miles of city riding. No drop, casual pace. What to bring: head light, tail light, bike lock, warm clothes, and bike shoes you feel comfortable walking in at The REACH.
This ride is open to all BAFS participants and friends who are vaccinated against COVID. If you are not yet fully vaccinated, stay tuned for future rides.
Thanks. Looking forward to it. Hoping for better weather….

ParticipantAn update: the route is at https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38337354. But I’m keeping an eye on the forecast. If we end up getting measurable snow on Friday night/Saturday morning, I’ll postpone the ride until the following Sunday, February 6.

ParticipantThe DC streets generally look OK based on the traffic cameras, so we’re still a go! Just be prepared for possible rerouting if needed (I’ll try to scout out the route before the 3:00 p.m. meetup time). Also, be sure to give your fellow riders extra room to maneuver and brake, and let them know of hazards ahead. Thanks.

ParticipantThanks to Komorebi for a great ride and to Reji for sweeping. It was pretty cold, but fun as well as educational.

ParticipantGreat ride. The triple murder at Kalorama and it’s influence on establishing Miranda rights was really interesting. It was the grey building which is now a 4 unit condo.

That was a great ride. This bronze sculpture of Japanese cranes entangled in barbed wire at the Japanese American Memorial to Patriotism is really striking. -
