Hi all,

My son plays in the UVA marching band, and every year I attend a couple of football games to watch the band. I’ve been wanting to ride there, but never have.
It’s his 4th year, so this is my last chance. Here’s my plan:

Friday, Oct 16 – Ride to Charlottesville
Saturday, Oct 17- Watch game
Sunday, Oct 18 – Ride home

I am relying on Google Maps (tentative route). I’m familiar with and can map my route for the first 10-15 miles, but beyond that I’m off the edge of the earth.

If you have any advice on best choice routes to and from Charlottesville, please share.

I found this route on MapMyRide: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2926798
I have not compared them yet.

Thanks,
Steve

No. I plan to head west on the W&OD from EFC at 7am, just before sunrise. You are welcome to hand me a coffee on a flyby.

Can you route by coffee somewhere if we get up at sunrise to support your departure???

When planning routes, I use Strava global heat map to see where people ride. http://labs.strava.com/heatmap

Thanks, Rod!
You people are right. No one rides on 28.

Using Rod’s suggestion, I remapped my route to avoid roads that appear to be never ridden on. New route is only a couple miles longer.
Here it is (MapMyRide)

I welcome any suggestions.

It has to be a place that’s open before 7am, because I want to get rolling pretty much as soon as it gets light out. Cafe Kindred doesn’t open that early; neither does Mike’s.

The two possibilities are the Starbuckses in Falls Church – 344 W. Broad (Broadale shopping center) and 1218 W. Broad by the Giant.

Oh no I meant use Strava heat map to find where everyone rides, then take the path less travelled! How else you gonna find the dirt roads and dead ends? :D

May beautiful fall colors be at your fore, and the wind at your aft.

So for you, it’s a cold map.

From the looks of Strava, you made it. How was the route/ride?

Made it. Both ways.

A million details, which I’m happy to share at happy hour or coffee. Two quick ones:

– Rod Smith will be happy to learn that I ended up on a couple of gravel roads, despite the “heat” map (I guess gravel grinders’ rides show up, too)
– Rte 20 between Orange and Charlottesville is a really, really, really, really, really, really, really, very, extremely bad place to ride on Friday afternoon. But it’s actually quite nice early on Sunday morning.

Oh, and if you ever decide to do this yourself, I highly recommend you choose October 16, 2015 to do it. The weather is ineffably sublime.

Pictures here.

So how many hours did it take each way?

From Strava:

Remarkably, my elapsed time differed by only about 2 minutes between the two trips.
