ParticipantRead that earlier this morning – great piece, and definitely a righteous commute.
WaPo is giving good space to cycling on a regular basis. Their lead piece on the Strava culture early this past summer was notable.October 20, 2013 at 7:00 pm #983982PotomacCyclist
ParticipantWow. The longest I’ve ever bike-commuted was 5 miles.

ParticipantHe would be a great addition to Freezing Saddles and our NBC team!

Only if he slacked off in December or sandbagged the estimates. Freezing saddles only rewards doing more, more , more.

ParticipantBig kudos to Mr Schantz!!
Note that he does a multimodal commute. I may have missed it, but don’t remembe seeing specific information about how much cycling he does each day, just his 8000 miles annual total.

ParticipantHe’s a FABB Member, BTW.
Hey, if you haven’t signed up for the Fairfax Bike Summit, please do it now! It’s a great chance to be heard by experts, advocates, community leaders, business leaders and even politicians.

ParticipantMy wife (a non cyclist) excitedly brought this article up during our walk yesterday. I think her quote was something along the lines of, “hey, someone even hardcore crazier than you!”
She said it lovingly, of course.

I think this is Mr. I-have-already-ridden-10500-miles-this-years’s way of respectfully saying “do not assume cycling mileage from length of commute”.
Of course, I think we’d all agree that 8k miles a year is a lot of time in the saddle; and it’s great that this is getting news coverage.
(Congrats, consularrider, that is really impressive mileage!)

ParticipantWell, if he was riding the full 70 mile round trip, you’d have to double his annual milage total.
I know my first year back in the US when I got back to bike commuting I put in a little over 8000 miles, and yes that is a lot of saddle time!

Kenneth scored 4909 points in the NBC. Not bad, but our team had 27 riders who scored more!

I’m ready for my close up, Mr. deMille (or Mr. Bezos).

ParticipantGeez… Even I beat him.

ParticipantJust glanced at the article again and noticed that his helmet straps are super loose(!), enough to make his helmet little more than decorative. He also rides without fenders (hardcore), and I can’t figure out what kind of gloves he has on; they look unusual.

ParticipantKind of beautiful how a skilled journalist can spin a story. Just because he rides less than Karen Smith, doesn’t mean we should laugh at his helmet straps and gloves. Some pro riders have their helmets straps adjusted wrong, and we all go through a pink glove phase. My favorite cycling gloves ever, my first pair (I think), were pink crocheted cotton with black leather palms. Sigh, a rosebud sort of memory for me.
