It’s that time again. DC is on the northern edge of a slight risk for severe this afternoon/evening. The bulk of it will hopefully come through well after the evening rush, but it’s definitely possible for squall lines or isolated severe storms to push out ahead of the main line.

Be sure to check local radar before you head out this evening.
I was figuring if I get out just in front of it that the winds would push me back to Alexandria and that it my own worry would drastically improve my speed getting home. (Joke).
In seriousness, hoping the storms later into the evening aren’t too too bad because I did bike in and I probably won’t get out of the office again until 7:30/8pm just like last night. I hate the 12+hour days

You may want to wear some football pads and get a stronger helmet AND don’t forget your ruby slippers just in case you end up in OZ because…..
TORNADO WATCH for the entire local area and from the PA/MD line south to South Carolina until 10pm this evening.
Seriously, have a look at the radar before you leave this afternoon/evening.

ParticipantWell, karma came back to bite me.
Leaving DC I saw two bolts of lightening. Crossing the 14th St Bridge the lightening picked up, as did my speed in attempting to get off the bridge, ie high place. I debated waiting for a little while under the bridge, but figured it wasn’t raining yet or all that windy. Bad decision. Of course I get to Gravelly Point and the winds kicked up so bad that I was switching down to my lowest gears just trying to make headway. Never fear, I thought, all I have to do is get behind the fencing by the airport and half the wind will be blocked out. Boom, then the skies open up to the torrential downpour. I got the first bridge and the rain was falling hard, but the wind had a died a little so I idiotically kept on. Second bridge it was getting a little worse, but I figured the nice big bridge down by the crossing of the ramp by the airport was a good place to stop and it couldn’t be more than 400 yards away. And that was yet another poor decision. The rain somehow got harder including with some hail I think because it was stinging bad, the wind picked up so bad that the rain was coming at me horizontally, and I debating if I was literally riding into a tornado or potentially on the outskirts of one. Knowing hanging under tree branches was not very wise, I ducked my head and decided I would hightail it to that bridge. So I ended up being fine, but my own joking seems to have contributed to karma. Moral of the story–stupid, but lucky… need to check the radar more closely next time. What did piss me off was I was about to leave work when I received a call that took almost 15 minutes. Those were my golden 15 minutes and I would have just escaped the storm otherwise.
Oh yah, my shoes were still partially soaked this morning so I had to do the old hair dryer to them routine.
