ParticipantNo, not a shortcut. It looks like the driver entered by mistake and only realized the error when he encountered the end of the trail at Route 1. Unable to exit to the roadway without possible damage to his car, he backtracked.
This is due to poor signage on the cul-de-sac at the northern end of Commonwealth Ave which has been discussed in this forum.

ParticipantFYI this is on another thread: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?11149-quot-Here%92s-a-Car-Driving-on-a-Bike-Path-in-Alexandria-quot
(just for the sake of keeping the discussion all in one place)

ParticipantRode the FMR detour this morning after coffee and observed this creative parking job. This was on the roadway just off Route 1 between the trail and the Toyota dealer in Alexandria.
To this motorist’s credit, only the sidewalk was blocked by the SUV and not the trail.
I’m not sure such a parking strategy would have gotten me a better score on the parallel parking portion of my driver’s license test.
Yes I did call the Alexandria Police and request this motorist be somehow recognized for their achievement.

And to think, someone actually did this, parked, and then thought “OH YEAH THIS IS A PERFECTLY FINE PARKING JOB; A PLUS FOR ME!”
Btw, I believe that deserves a 0 on the parallel parking portion because the test is for parallel, not perpendicular, parking.
(I may have added a bit of hyperbole)

Update: I sent the GM of the Toyota dealer an email at 8:43 pm. At 9:40 pm, I got this response:
“I was not in today, I just sent the picture around to my managers and discovered the vehicle belongs to a new employee. I couldn’t agree more with your position. I spoke with the head of his dept. and I can assure you it will not happen again. Thank you for brining this to our attention.
Thanks,
John Taylor”
I’d expect somebody is going to be party to an uncomfortable discussion the next time they get to the office. Kudos to the Toyota dealership for a quick and unequivocal response.

Tho, being a Toyota guy, I am a little ashamed.
