Fun fact: no two Harris Teeters are even remotely the same! The one in Hill East, the one in Navy Yard, the one in Pentagon Row…all totally different.
This is true. The HT in Pentagon City larger and nicer.

But like, even the aisles are arranged differently and stuff that’s together in one store is separate in another. It’s maddening!

Harris Teeter: the labyrinth of modern times. I wonder what would represent the Minotaur? Probably pita chips. I can never find the f*cking things at any Harris Teeter.

I nominate the Potomac Yard HT as the worst (most labyrinthian?). It’s the closest I’ve ever come to actually being lost in a grocery store, and I remember having to walk around a bit just to find the checkout area (found it after retracing my steps). I’d love to see the floor plan of that one!
Oh, and there is no reason for pita chips to not be in the frigging chip aisle in any grocery store!

I spent like 15 minutes the other day looking for tortillas. They were in a middle-of-the-aisle thing in the freezer section. W.T.F.
Also, why are seltzers not in the same place as all the other carbonated and non-carbonated flavored waters?? GAH.

Here’s a route to the Giant in Bailey’s that still requires climbing (seriously steep) but avoids traffic pretty much altogether.
Interesting. Here is the flattest route I could find, which is what I actually use to visit Giant/REI(I come from Vienna and use the W&OD). Google says it would take 36 Minutes, but the return trip is all downhill and takes 7 Minutes.

One tiny improvement: you can avoid getting on Columbia Pike by turning right as you come down the hill from the Serrano Apartments and go around the old bank building. Then cross straight onto Jefferson at the light.Thank you! This looks like a pretty good low stress route. I didn’t know about the Serrano cut through. From my place I’d be able to hop on Dinwiddie/7th to go up the hill and make it a bit more of a direct route or climb up the hill on 8th.

How’s the ride down Route 7 when you take that route? When I go to REI through my route up George Mason, I take a lane on 7 because the parallel access road has all kinds of traffic and cars turning in from Route 7. I haven’t had much issue taking a lane on that stretch.
Have you taken the Columbia Pike route back recently? That stretch of the Pike is undergoing some major gas line work and utility undergrounding and is in terrible condition right now. Patches everywhere, missing lane markings and a plate or two.

I use the SW sidewalk(same direction as the traffic) along RT7, and sometimes the NE sidewalk, but that one requires dismounting at a gas station. I haven’t been to the area in about 6 Months, so I didn’t know about the utility work.

ParticipantAlso, if you want to avoid RT7, just continue on Glen Carlyn RD, and use the side streets to the west, like shown here. It’s less stressful when approaching REI/Giant from the west. I can’t take credit for finding these routes, most were posted here by other members.

ParticipantOne day late, but marking the 4th anniversary without owning a car (August 28, 2015).
I remember one time last year I was riding home at night from somewhere, and I thought, (“How do people without bikes get places they want to go?”) It took me a minute or two to remember that they probably have a car.
