ParticipantI’ve been thinking about doing this race…actually I was pulled in on a “you should do it” dare, from one of my co-workers. Being that I’ve never raced period (road, mtb or cross), I’m starting to re-think my idea to race Cat 5 in this race. I was stoked to do it until I looked at a video course preview online: http://vimeo.com/54553281 . Based on that, the course looks INSANE, especially the bridge sections. What do you all think? Should I do it? Should I do my first ever race on this course that looks crazy? Or am I being a p*ssy?

ParticipantJust do it, everybody’s doing it. All the cool kids are doing it. But if you’re not cool, you shouldn’t do it.

Look. Are you likely to survive the next year? Is there some dire sword hanging over your head? If not, come out and watch the race. Walk the course. Observe the bike handling skills. Enjoy the atmosphere. Few things in life are now or never. This isn’t that.

ParticipantIt’s cad 5. There will be a mix of cad 2 road racers with 6000 dollar bikes, guys that have entered for the first time with 6000 dollar bikes, people that have not hopped on a bike in three years and the mountain bikers. The start will be an all out brawl of clipping in and raising heart rates but after that about half way in the middle of the pack it’s like a social ride that ends too early. The first lap is just people getting position and after that you’ll be surprised how low key it is. Don’t quit. The first race should be about not quitting and doing the race at your own pace. You will be surprised how well you do. It’s just one big traffic jam and the guys who got out first will stay there until they get to the back of the traffic jam. Just pedal your bike and enjoy the ride. Your not going to hold anyone up. Racing is more fun then watching but after the race watch the other races and see how they go over barriers and deal with loose soil. Get the first race out of the way, have fun, pedal your bike and don’t quit.

Just for scientific purposes, was it the thoughtful response by Leadandsteel or my classic peer pressure.
Good for you. It sounds like a blast.November 27, 2013 at 3:10 pm #987025djwrekless
ParticipantA little bit of both. Your peer pressure had me thinking, but Leadandsteel’s response put me over the edge. Maybe I’m just trying to make myself feel better, but I figure there’s no point in putting it off. There’ll always be an excuse not to race, so I might as well do it now. Thanks for the advice you guys. I’ll send my hospital bills to you.

Participant^^^^^
Actually, I’m looking forward to the colder weather with the possibility of rain, because I just picked up a new pair of tires with a more aggressive tread.

ParticipantAs a tentative spectator I am very hopeful that it will be muddy! To date the cx races I have seen (and couple participated in) have all been bone dry — it feels wrong!

ParticipantHey, rain, snow, or sleet should make things interesting.

ParticipantI’ll be there for the first several races, until I run out of cupcakes (or die of hypothermia). I’m going to pick up a few trays of cupcakes and could use some help with hand-ups.
I’ll be wearing a blue, Forever Lazy Suit, made famous by Dirt.
