To the all the “racers” who get dolled up in their fruity spandex outfits for a blast down the CCT… it’s not a ******* velodrome. In fact, it is a recreational-use trail designed for just that — leisure and moderate exercise activities. It’s not designed nor intended for cycling time trials.

So, when there is a group of 6 people walking together, two joggers, 1 stroller pusher, and 2 older slow bikers 100 yds ahead of you moving towards you on the trail… and other cyclists are safely passing this throng… SLOW THE **** DOWN!

You are violating a major safety rule which is clearly spelled out for bikers on the CCT info signs. Travel at a safe speed… especially when there is congestion on the trail. And, understand that other bikers may be passing close groups of slower walkers, joggers, etc. far ahead of you. This is what happens on a trail. You leotard-wearing speedy boys need to adjust to this… no one has to adjust to you.

Also, you delusional wannabes might not realize something… Slower traffic has the right of way on any recreational trail (this is also spelled out on the CCT signs).

If you want to ride that fast, River Rd, Massachusetts Ave, and Macarthur Blvd are all waiting for you and will take you to the same place.

Okay, instead, you will be reported to the police. Everyone’s “fears” assuaged?

BI, I think you have a valid point in appropriate passing/yielding/calling of passes, but couching it in these terms automatically puts everyone here in a defensive posture. There are more productive ways to change behavior than threats–be they physicial or “to call the police” (on the latter point, good luck getting their attention on anything cycling or pedestrian related). Some folks here have literally been tackled, attacked or had objects thrown at them by insane drivers/pedestrians so they will immediately think you’re serious, and, quite frankly, probably should given their personal experiences.

Yes, people should be careful cycling and pay due diligence to others on the multi-use paths. I think most of us recognize the path is shared and not all, but many of us try to be diligent of the fact by calling our passes, by approaching pedestrians with caution (or avoiding them) and so forth. Similarly, when I walk on the path near my house, I don’t suddenly turn into the path of bikers and I nod or wave my hand in appreciation to those calling their paasses. In the end of the day, all of the above have a right to the path that’s not more or less equal than the others–the necessity to use the path safely and yield appropriately general follows the rule with speed (a bicycle>roller blader>skateboarder>jogger>walker>family).

PS–the CCT was not designed solely for exercise, but also a means for people to move between Silver Spring, Bethesda and Georgetown without using a car/Metro in a safe manner.

By any chance did you visit the Baltimore Museum of Art in the 1980s?

I think the physical violence threat overshadowed this crap too… who the hell is this guy? Seriously, he needs to grow up. This forum is really nice to read because the whole ITG (internet tough guy) aspect has been removed thanks to moderation and mostly considerate, well-meaning forum members.

In all fairness, this is the kit I wore today….

I think it really helps that almost everyone on here has met at some point or another. Takes away a lot of the Internet Tough Guy syndrome when you know you’ll see someone over coffee or beers.

If you never want to see someone’s hate filled rant again, if you go to their profile, you can hit the IGNORE THIS PERSON link…. and their posts will no longer be visible to you.

Wrong. That is an internal IP address distributed by routers. Hundreds of thousands of users have that IP address :)

Well, then that should narrow it down for the Internet police, right?

    ;)

Maybe one of the Segway Park Patrol guys will spot him ranting and raving in his anti-spandex garb.

    True.

I would have even been glad to meet with BlackIrish for a beer too, if only he hadn’t introduced himself with a threat. Maybe that’s an Irish thing though.

(Now we get to find out whose Irish among us – flame away).

    Oi! :D

Nah, that’s not an Irish thing at all. We’re snarky, sarcastic, and can hold a grudge like nobody’s business, but we usually start out friendly. ;)

That right there was pure Internet Tough Guy. I diagnose an overexposure to bikeforums.net at a tender age.

I doubt the person who started this thread will ever even come back. So responding to him/her is probably not accomplishing much. However, I ride the CCT several times a week for my commute and it is exactly as this person described. These guys are reckless and act as if the trail is theirs and everyone else is just clutter.

I’m on the CCT twice a day every day (8/8:30AM and again 4-5PM) and I don’t see that many people being that careless. To be clear, in the morning I’m only on for the last 1/2 mile of the trail in to Georgetown and in the afternoon from Georgetown up to the Dalecarlia, but I haven’t seen that many riders riding belligerently. I cant claim much exposure to trail conditions in the morning, but in the afternoon I’m on the trail for 4 miles or so – am I missing something?

All of that said, when I was riding home this afternoon some guy popped out up onto the trail at Fletcher’s without looking and nearly hit me and another oncoming rider.

I see reckless cyclists on the MVT too. That’s why I started up a thread earlier this year about not using the MVT (or other multiuse trails) for bike speed workouts.

But I don’t get the need to blame EVERY cyclist and threaten them as a group. So if one driver acts dangerously, I should go ranting and raving at every car driver out there? Or if the person had Maryland or Pennsylvania plates, I should hold some sort of grudge against every individual from Maryland or Pennsylvania and threaten them all? Hmm, maybe I should have taken a logic class in college. I must have missed something.
