ParticipantSnow. Ice. Now rivers of poo.
They sure don’t make bike commuting easy.
Hopefully, they will get this cleared up fast.

Two guys are passed by a bizarre looking and terrified creature running by as fast as it can. Seconds later they are passed by an equally bizarre but quite different creature, intent on catching the first.
Says one guy to the other, “These days it’s one d**n thing after another.”

ParticipantHmm, I’m not seeing it at the CCTrail link.
I’m really hoping this gets cleared up soon. I’ve got to bike from Bethesda to Georgetown and back tomorrow, and don’t relish the “straight up Wisconsin Avenue” option.
Edit: The good news (such as it is) is that the closure is only from Fletcher’s Cove to the Georgetown end of the trail. Thus, it should be possible to take the CCT as far as Fletcher’s Cove, then switch to the Canal Towpath for the rest of the way.

ParticipantThey are saying it will be a week to reopen the CCT:
http://www.cctrail.org/CCT_Conditions.htm
Checked at the Georgetown trailhead at 3:15 pm today (May 1). Lower trail still closed from trailhead to Fletcher’s Cove. Workman at trailhead said the trail closure may last for a week while broken sewer main section is replaced.
Some alternate routes are posted there.

ParticipantMaybe they are merely trying a mass cure for an outbreak of clostridium difficile infection (CDI).

ParticipantI took this home yesterday. Pretty easy to walk your bike up the stairs and ride down to Fletcher’s to get the CCT again. Might be an issue if you have 23s because there seem to be a lot of sharp, big rocks on that stretch of the towpath.

ParticipantTowpath detour is pretty muddy this morning (Tuesday 05.06.14) after last night’s rain…a lot of puddles, most of which have spots you can get around them, but there is some zig zagging involved. Definitely smells like a sewage spill over by the spill point….you can see the crew on the trail in the white plastic suits working down there. Talked to one of the workers, and they said they don’t have a definite timeline yet. I wished him well, and carried on….slow going in the mud, added about 15 minutes to my commute.
Saw a lot of cyclists with all manner of bikes, and no one seemed to be having any trouble. I went ahead and jumped on the towpath right at Fletcher’s so I didn’t have to use the stairs.

ParticipantA cyclist talked to the workers who say the work has been done, and they are waiting for sign off from DC Water and NPS.

That’s very welcom news.
It looked like they had wrapped up yesterday afternoon when I rode by.DC Water and NPS approvals, though? May be several more days…

ParticipantNBC is announcing “After millions of gallons of sewage & rain water spilled into C&O Canal, the Capital Crescent Trail has re-opened.” (confirmation???)

ParticipantCONFIRMED!
I took a quick trip over and rode the entire section. It looks like the worst of it was at the tunnel but there was another section closer to G-town with straw on the trail shoulder.
