Not to pile on, but I’ll add this to the collection. This is at least the third time I’ve seen professional camera crews setting up to shoot an interview in the lanes. The traffic islands really need some kind of painted indicator to show that they’re a lane. I’ve had tourists argue with me that they’re completely in the right to block the whole thing.
I’ve had similar experiences. It would be nice if they’d fix that – I can understand the confusion from pedestrians, though some of them could be a little less unpleasant about it.

I forget where i heard DC bragging about 50 some tickets and 60 some warnings given out for u-turns since the law change in January (that’s when it was, right?). Based on observations, and a super-conservative estimate, that’s about four hours of enforcement for the year.
It’s funny — the police really seem surprised sometimes that when they don’t enforce a law, people don’t obey it. Sort of like when Montogomery county police tried enforcing pedestrian safety law one time: http://greatergreaterwashington.org/post/18824/pedestrian-sting-finds-frequent-driver-lawlessness/

ParticipantA low speed collision with a camera tripod would be unfortunate.

ParticipantGotta admit, each time I see this post title I giggle due to the British slang for err… men’s err… plumbs!

ParticipantLooks like the police (FBI this time) got one driver: http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/citydesk/2013/05/20/video-cab-driver-cuts-into-bike-lane-gets-caught/
Also in that article is another video from the cyclist almost getting run over by another car where the driver didn’t just try a U-turn, they were also on their phone!

ParticipantHaha – I saw you taking this picture…and then I almost got run over by the motorcade he was protecting while crossing the next intersection.
If he had either stopped the us (to protect us from the motorcade), or parked in the car lanes his purpose would have been served. I thought about photo-bombing you – maybe next time!

ParticipantI went through PA Ave about 30 minutes ago and there was a guy at maybe 10th or 11th doing a story on the u-turns. I saw two, then three, and the third was a cabbie with his window down. I yelled, “No u-turns! That’s $100 fine and two points!”. He stared at me. That’s when the reporter started talking to me. I gave him 30 seconds of breathless adrenaline-fueled words of displeasure on camera, including mentioning that I had been hit by a u-turner on PA Ave. During that time I watched 8 cars u-turn on the next block.
If anyone is free downtown, go talk to the guy. And find out what the article is for, I’d like to see it.

ParticipantWABA has a post on this today too — amazing what some pictures can do to spur interest, and hopefully action!

http://www.waba.org/blog/2013/05/update-from-the-mayors-office-on-pennsylvania-avenue/The letter from the Mayor’s office doesn’t inspire confidence that anything is going to get done soon. There is no excuse for the old bollards not to be back in place by now. Enforcement won’t really help matters since we have too many out of towners going through DC.
I’d be happy if they moved the jersey barriers from the Jefferson Memorial and installed them along PA Ave. At least there they’d serve a legitimate safety purpose.

ParticipantI hear they’re going to do another useless but showy enforcement at 10am tomorrow – well past rush hour, and on the day before a big holiday weekend. I think knee-jerk enforcement after the mainstream media makes them look bad is even worse than no enforcement at all.
I’d like to see anyone who is able to ride through at 10am and ask the police officers to please come back at rush hour, when it really matters, and when it might really make a difference.
