Welcome to Calvinball, where the rules are constantly made up and the points don’t matter!

I am the new Tim the Enchanter, also known as Bruce the Sleepy — keeper of the scores and arbiter of the rules. I will begin the game by hiding the Calvinball and posting here.

    Initial Rules:

Your quest is to seek thee the gameball, hidden secretly amongst the cycling trails inside the beltway (but not to be found in any federal park).

Seek the game ball. Maketh up a new ordinance for the game. Hide the sacred ball. Post your new ordinance along with guidance on how those who follow can seek the gameball. Thou shall find, hide and post within the same hours 24.

For finding the gameball, ye shall be awarded 5 points, less a point for each day that passeth before the gameball is once again uncovered.

Ye may find the gameball but once during each rotation of the Earth. Ye may possess the gameball but once every other turn.

If your new ordinance nets three likes, ye shall likewise be award points equaling five and your ordinance shall be implemented as law of the game, which all who play must loyally adhere.

This be not organized competition. This be Calvinball. New rules are obliged to follow the spirit of Saint Calvin and Saint Hobbes. New ordinances shall not thee be bills of attainder but must generally apply to all fools of venture into our midst. New ordinances cannot benefit the ordinance’s scribe uniquely. New ordinances should make the court jester smile upon thee, and shall not place any in existential peril.

If a new ordinance shall contravene an old ordinance, the ordinance with highest net likes shall be declared the law.

    Ordinances that matter:

    • 3 points for pic of Calvinball balanced on head
    • 2 points for on-site consumption
    • 10 points for wearing the friendship bracelet to the closing happy hour (hunt me down to show me)

Ephemeral Ordinances and ones that don’t matter:

    • Staying in DC
    • Bringing it back to VA
    • Freeing Hobbes
    • Friendshipball is called the friendshipball
    • Nepotismball’s band should be worn

    Scores:
    Spreadsheet

    Prizes:
Those who play shall seek their reward as follows:
    • Rosalyn Award :: The player with the ordinance that has acquired the most net likes at the time of the next find
    • Miss Wormwood Award :: The player with the most implemented ordinances
    • Spaceman Spiff Award :: Best Calvinball
    • Calvin Award :: Tim’s Award of Mystery (oooooooooohhh)
    • Hobbes Award :: The Hobbes Prize is to be awarded to the person whom played but scored the least amount of points.
    • Susie Award :: Most swag points
    • Lost Dog Rescue Award :: Best picture of your dog

    Notes:
Consider Thee Calvinball a Hot-potatoe game – not a hide-and-seek game. This be not geocaching. More, we wish the Calvinball attain perpetual motion, constantly moving, from pilgrim to pilgrim. (Translation: don’t make your hides hard or your rules constraining. The more silliness the better)
This is not a winner take all game — “The points don’t matter”

Thanks to rcannon100 for moderating last year’s Calvinball game and providing a template for this thread.

Saw Giraffey in the move on the Mount Vernon Trail today. Looking forward to the pictures of his adventure.

Wish I could’ve gone out to find them before I left for my trip. I would’ve smuggled them in my bag bound for Maui ensuring that they would’ve warmed up nicely. And we’ve got DirectTV on the flight too!

Would’ve loved to have seen which intrepid Calvinites would’ve taken up the mantle to “ride” out to the Islands to pick them up and bring them home.

Today Giraffey and I went on a great MVT adventure. He’d never been on the MVT south of Old Town, so he was super excited.

First we checked out Jones Point Park

Then on to Dyke Marsh, where Giraffey learned about all the neat birds there

Giraffey thought the stone bridge crossing at Alexandria Ave was super cool

Then we found a super cool bicentennial tree along the trail!

Ohhh what a nice scenic overlook…

Giraffey thinks Fort Hunt is super cool, and was excited to learn all about it’s history.

Giraffey found out there’s some exercise equipment along the MVT! He’s getting totally buff so Siber Hobbes will totally go on a date with him.

Giraffey reminds you to please not dredge by gas lines!

We made it to Mount Vernon! Giraffey was excited to learn more about the awesome MVT, and is totally going to be a PAL.

    mmmm lunch at Mount Vernon!

Sadly, on the way back a car completely blocked the cross walk at Porto Vecchio along the MVT, making Giraffey and me cut onto the GW parkway to get around it. Totally NOT COOL. But did you know there’s been a proposal to ban right on reds here, which should discourage drivers from cutting across the cross walk to turn right when they have a red light? At least one forum member got hit by a car who tried to turn right on red here, and I’ve had multiple close calls from cars flying across the crosswalk when they’ve had a red here. If you feel strongly about keeping the trail (and Giraffey) safe, please come to the Alexandria Traffic and Parking Board hearing on February 25, at 7:30 PM to let them know you support no turn on reds at this dangerous intersection. They’ll be discussing this proposal at that meeting.

On a more positive note, Giraffey and I then checked out the (hopefully) new site of a 2 way cycletrack on E. Abingdon…

Did you know the MVT can get you to some neat places to run errands?!?!? To end the ride, Giraffey and I went to Target, which had originally been the point of my whole ride today. We got some important home safety devices so we don’t accidentally light on fire. Giraffey is all about fire safety.

Giraffey and I then went back to where I found him to pick up some trash. And then we ran into @sszibler! We all worked together to pick up some trash to make our trails a better place to ride and walk.

    The End.

Giraffey had a great time on his MVT adventure and even saw some cool sights yesterday on Judd’s Presidents Day ride.

He’s now back to where I found him and ready for his next adventure. He’s waiting for you at the corner of Eads and 4mrt, by the stairs under the single rock. He realized on yesterday’s President’s Day ride that many of you haven’t washed your gear yet this winter so he brought something to make you smell better…

    I found the Hobbes ball!

I balanced it on my head

Given the rather unpleasant Triplets of Belleville debacle, the two said they would rather not watch teevee–or at least not what Steve O might suggest. So they watched the fish instead.

Hobbes and whozhamacallit are in a warm and enticing place where good coffee and good music may be found.

You can get there through this door if you like. (There’s another door, too)
