Welcome to Calvinball, where the rules are constantly made up and the points don’t matter!

I am the new Tim the Enchanter, also known as Bruce the Sleepy — keeper of the scores and arbiter of the rules. I will begin the game by hiding the Calvinball and posting here.

Initial Rules:

Your quest is to seek thee the gameball, hidden secretly amongst the cycling trails inside the beltway (but not to be found in any federal park).

Seek the game ball. Maketh up a new ordinance for the game. Hide the sacred ball. Post your new ordinance along with guidance on how those who follow can seek the gameball. Thou shall find, hide and post within the same hours 24.

For finding the gameball, ye shall be awarded 5 points, less a point for each day that passeth before the gameball is once again uncovered.

Ye may find the gameball but once during each rotation of the Earth. Ye may possess the gameball but once every other turn.

If your new ordinance nets three likes, ye shall likewise be award points equaling five and your ordinance shall be implemented as law of the game, which all who play must loyally adhere.

This be not organized competition. This be Calvinball. New rules are obliged to follow the spirit of Saint Calvin and Saint Hobbes. New ordinances shall not thee be bills of attainder but must generally apply to all fools of venture into our midst. New ordinances cannot benefit the ordinance’s scribe uniquely. New ordinances should make the court jester smile upon thee, and shall not place any in existential peril.

If a new ordinance shall contravene an old ordinance, the ordinance with highest net likes shall be declared the law.

Ordinances that matter:

• 3 points for pic of Calvinball balanced on head
• 2 points for on-site consumption
• 10 points for wearing the friendship bracelet to the closing happy hour (hunt me down to show me)

Ephemeral Ordinances and ones that don’t matter:

• Staying in DC
• Bringing it back to VA
• Freeing Hobbes
• Friendshipball is called the friendshipball
• Nepotismball’s band should be worn

Scores:
Spreadsheet

Prizes:
Those who play shall seek their reward as follows:
• Rosalyn Award :: The player with the ordinance that has acquired the most net likes at the time of the next find
• Miss Wormwood Award :: The player with the most implemented ordinances
• Spaceman Spiff Award :: Best Calvinball
• Calvin Award :: Tim’s Award of Mystery (oooooooooohhh)
• Hobbes Award :: The Hobbes Prize is to be awarded to the person whom played but scored the least amount of points.
• Susie Award :: Most swag points
• Lost Dog Rescue Award :: Best picture of your dog

Notes:
Consider Thee Calvinball a Hot-potatoe game – not a hide-and-seek game. This be not geocaching. More, we wish the Calvinball attain perpetual motion, constantly moving, from pilgrim to pilgrim. (Translation: don’t make your hides hard or your rules constraining. The more silliness the better)
This is not a winner take all game — “The points don’t matter”

Thanks to rcannon100 for moderating last year’s Calvinball game and providing a template for this thread.

Locations looked good to me. For the notes: if you’re going with when Hobbes was hidden for consistency, the first spot on 4MR should be “Hidden by Emm 1/11” not Steve O (who found him on 1/12), and the second spot by the canal was hidden by Steve O on 1/12 (we didn’t find him until 1/18 :( ).

Holy Hobbes, I’ll see what I can do later, after rehiding him. This is starting to have a geocaching vibe . . . LOL . . . how are you coming up with coordinates? I may just do descriptions or streets if I can figure out the rides that I didn’t label because I didn’t want to make it too easy. :D

I got the coordinates from clicking on Google Maps (since the first few hiding spots weren’t on roads, it defaulted to the coordinates rather than a street address). Anything that allows drevil to add it to the route will work :) At this point, I think all that’s missing is the “best bike shop in the city” where you hid Hobbes on 1/24 and the mini-forest where you found Hobbes yesterday.

The mini-forest where sszibler retrieved Hobbes on 1/30 is mid-way through the alley from 303 N West St and 308 N Payne St in Alexandria.

Siberian Hobbes needs rescuing quickly. He needs a safe house. While passing the Spy Museum he was recognized by a former member of the Company as a suspected Russian double-agent. He high-tailed it out of there, knocking down the agent on the way. He is now taking refuge in Banneker’s Park at the center. Please help!

OK, Hobbesball map updated again: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29261378

1/11 – Emm hid
1/12 – Steve O hid
1/22 – LhasaCM hid
1/22 – Erikacae hid
1/23 – Drevil hid
1/24 – Sszibler hid
1/28 – Thor hid

I feel like I’m missing a Josh hiding between Sszibler and Thor… someone let me know if it needs corrections.

Also, to get coordinates (that I can easily use):

1. Go to Google Maps
2. Right-click on the point where you want the coordinates
3. Select “What’s here?”
4. Another popup shows at the bottom with the coordinates. Click the coordinates link.
5. On the left pane, the coordinates show up like this: 38°48’30.8″N 77°03’12.7″W
6. Copy and paste that into the post, along with when you hid Hobbesball (after it’s been found).

Rats. I guess this one was found and I missed it. Now I’m stuck on the top of a parking deck with a flat tire and it’s 18 degrees. Didn’t bring repair stuff for obvious reasons and even forgot my cleat covers. Booger’s.

Which number post is its rehiding?

So, yeah, I hid at DCW in Georgetown as LhasaCM said, and rehid after the mini-garden, I’m not telling you where! But SarahBee should have an easy time at him. Let’s get some new stuff in there!

I found that “What’s here?” feature doesn’t work in open areas, like parks, it gives you the nearest address. For an exact spot, try this web site, then copy “Lat,Long” into the search bar of Google Maps, then click “Share”, “Copy to clipboard” to get a web link. I just tested it with both a desktop and Android phone, it worked in both cases:

Siberian Hobbes has been rescued most likely from a bomb squad…
That polished marble fountain slope, now covered in thin ice, was fuckin dangerous. I loved it.

Speaking of Bomb Squads… ;)

Apparently the Green Calvinball needed some refuge from the early morning snow and found its way to my bike at Northside Social. I was in a hurry when I left, so no photo of the ball on the bike, but I did snap a photo of me balancing the ball on my head (a hard feat with a round waterbottle and a round head!) after I got to work.

The Green Calvinball has been reloaded and will be hidden later today (probably on my route home).

Calvinball is now hidden.
Near the westernmost point on the loop.
In the snow, tracks were ridden.
Behind the caboose you should snoop.

Well Hobbes wasn’t enthusiastic about any of the camping spots I showed him on the way home, but he is interested in going to the New District Brewery tonight so somebody will likely run into him there.

Time? Will you be joining hobbes there?

edit: wait nevermind I see there’s a HH there tonight. It wasn’t on the calendar so I had to search the forum for it.
