ParticipantWe’re not just a commuters’ forum. This is a forum for everyone who bikes or wants to, as well as former bike commuters who drive their cars to join us at happy hours. Congrats on finding a new job so quickly!
Gotta go. Chris Froome is doing really well. Wiggens and Cadel are amazing!

Time to push for a cycle track on the east-west highway.

ParticipantIf I every need to find new job, below are my requirements by priority.

Good luck on your new job!

ParticipantWow, that’s remarkable turnaround finding a new job. Congratulations! I hope this new job is better than the old one. So sorry to hear about the commuting issue though. Perhaps you can talk them into letting you telework a day or two a week or something similarly creative. If we had more infrastructure like the WO&D it may have been doable for you to bike commute.
And of course anyone with an interest in biking is welcome to the forum.

ParticipantCongrats on the new job. You don’t need to leave. You can just be our long distance liaison.
And yet the ghetto ward is planning a protest because “there are no jobs”.

ParticipantYou only get kicked off the forum if you buy a 9 person SUV that you drive by yourself and do donuts through the PA Ave cycletracks and blow all the lights on the Custis.
Good luck on the new job.

There was another job I interviewed for that just couldn’t turn around their offer fast enough. It’s in Alexandria near the King St. Metro, which would’ve been nice. The salary was a bit less, but benefits were very good. I just couldn’t get an indication if they were even interested, and the other offer was ticking down, they wanted an answer. I couldn’t risk losing that offer for a “possibility” that the Alexandria one was going to make an offer. So, my priority was 1) job, 2) the other stuff lol
I was only kidding about leaving :p I do wish there was some more convenient way to get to Bowie from Bethesda, but I just don’t think enough people actually do that commute that it’s worth it. At least I’ll be going against the flow of rush traffic, for the most part.

ParticipantWow- that’s rough. Taking a generic “‘Bethesda” to “Bowie” google map the bike directions have 74 turns with 71 of them under a mile and the longest single road only 3 miles… That. Is. Awful.

ParticipantHow about a multi-modal commute?
Bike to the bus? Or maybe take a folding bike on the metro?

So, as typical with government contracts, I found out mine is “not being renewed due to budgetary constraints”… basically I’m expensive, and the first to go. Fortunately, it took me about 7 days to find a new job and accept the offer

Hmmm. Seems like there oughta be a way.
Or through the Beltsville farms?
Yikes, I see your point — that’s a lotta miles. Looks like a good ride, though…

Move to Alexandria! We have a nice cheese shop.

ParticipantIf Maryland ever gets its act together and builds the Purple Line then it may be more feasible for you. Then again, the operative words there were “If Maryland gets its act together” and it seems they’re more interested in expanding Baltimore’s “Red Line” than in ever doing anything more for DC ‘burbs.

Maybe the other offer will still come through? It’s not nice to ditch a new job that you just accepted but I did it once and the world did not come to an end. I, and the employer, were much better off in the end because I know now I would not have been happy in the job I ditched and the job I did take led me on a whole new career path that I’m still on over a decade later.

ParticipantHate to hear that anyone’s job is expendable but it doesn’t get much better than a week between jobs after an unexpected layoff. My record was 6 months and that took a thousand-mile move. I hope the new position treats you better, and please don’t be a stranger!
