    Yeah I only paid for a new cable, despite roughly two man hours of labor. And this was on a bike I hadn’t even bought there! The fraying was really bad because I stubbornly kept using the shifter until it was totally jammed.

    MFC, for what this posting is worth, I’m assuming the cable head is broken off in the shifter rachet mechanism, if there’s enough cable to grab with a pair of needle nose pliers, pull the cable leftward while shifting to the lowest gear. If the cable head gets stuck, don’t force it. Hopefully that works for you.
