Bicycles would be permitted to use the on-street transit lanes in the Crystal City segment to
provide for northbound (on Crystal Drive) and southbound (on South Clark Street) bicycle travel.
There are currently on-street bicycle lanes on Crystal Drive and South Clark Street. There are no
reasonably convenient parallel facilities to displace bicycles to and continue to provide bicycle
access to the core of Crystal City. Therefore, staff recommends maintaining bicycle
accommodation on Crystal Drive and South Clark Street.

In contrast, bicycles would be excluded from the transit lanes in the Potomac Yard segment, as
parallel bicycle facilities are provided: marked bicycle lanes on Potomac Avenue and an asphalt
side path between 35th Street South and 29th Street South immediately adjacent to the
    Transitway.

    Board item deferred

The County Board was scheduled to consider at their July 18 meeting an ordinance to create bus-only lanes in Crystal City and Potomac Yard and allow enforcement of their use. The lanes are under construction as part of the Crystal City Potomac Yard Transitway project.

This item has been deferred and will not come to the Board until at least September. The additional time will allow us to further clarify the proposed changes and address concerns about how the lanes will operate and be enforced. We’ll hold additional stakeholder meetings during the next two months and provide ongoing updates through this email listserv.
